Hi,
I am travelling to Nepal for the first time in November to do the Everest Base Camp.
Just wondering are there any must have items that I might forget to pack?
I am a little worried about the cold. I\'m taking a good sleeping bag, thermals and plan to buy a down jacket in kathmandu. Any tips for dealing with the cold?
Thanks for your help. Reply to this

Hi,
Well, sounds like you’re almost done but, check your items once again ‘casue you’re trekking above five thousand metres in November. Here are few most important equippments during treks, please check it out...

Down or fibre filled jacket*
Windbreaker or jumper/pullover*
Hiking pants*
Cotton T-shirts
Socks (polypropylene)
Trekking or Hiking boot
Camp shoe or thongs*
Woollen hat*
Gloves*
A pair of walking or trekking pole*
Water bottle*

You can rent or buy these* items in Kathmandu. The best way to dealing with cold is keep yourself dry and warm specially each day after trek, change your cloths once you reach your lodge, drink plenty of liquid (water, soup, tea or coffee), it’ll also help you to avoid altitude sickness. If you have any more questions, please go ahead without hesitation.

Regards,

Hi there,

You must bring a down sleeping bag coz it is freezing at night. You can have hot shower in some guest houses on the way but you will finish it fast because of the temperature.

If you are going to hire a porter, you can bring more stuff.

Remember, don't ascend too fast. Listen to your body reaction to the altitude.

Hi, One thing you didn't mention is whether you are traveling solo or with the help of a guide or porters. Many are available in Kathmandu and you can negotiate their services. It will be much easier on you if you don't have to carry a heavy pack. I travelled that course from Lukla, Namche Bazaar to Gokyo Lakes, over Cho La Pass then up the Khumbu valley. The return trip was down Khumbu valley to Thyangboche.

The most valuable items were, that I can remember were plenty of cotton hankies (running noses come with the territory while walking in the cold air, tissues and toilet tissue will have your nose very red and sore after no time); take metal water bottles like the Sigmas as you can pour boiled water for drinking the next day and use them to heat up your sleeping bag at night (they are far more hygienic than plastic bottles); thermal socks, under gloves and underwear are a must. I went in May and it was still very cold. One of the common pieces of advice for trekking anywhere is "layers". You will trek and heat up very quickly. Light layers and many of them. I think at one stage, Cho La Pass was freezing cold, I had on my thermal set, long sleeve T, short sleeve T, Polar fleece jumper and pants, wind/water resistant overpants, Gore Tex Jacket, thermal and polar fleece gloves, neck warmer, beanie pulled down over my ears, sock liners, thermal hiking socks and gore tex hiking boots. Going to the toilet tent was an ordeal.

Oh, and one more thing for comfort was a soft warm liner for the sleeping bag. It helped make things more cosy in the tent.

The things we do for the adventure, huh?

I hope this helps.

Thanks guys for being so helpful.

I'm going to hire a porter so I can bring things to keep warm esp after reading Lynneelou's post.

Will do a bit of shopping once i get there but have realised i need lots more layers.

Thanks again!
