Guys,
Any info on Kashmir's situation lately? Anyone been there lately? Safe to travel, i'm planning to be there in June. Thanks!!! Reply would be greatly appreciated.
Reply to this Hi Eric,
Kashmir is considered unsafe to travel since the late 80s bcoz of numerous terrorist activities. However, in the recent past there has been no incident that would consider travel there unsafe. Plenty of tourists from India & abroad visit the valley through the year and have returned safely. However, honestly, its a calculated risk that you have to take since Kashmir still is a disputed territory.
June is a nice time to visit Kashmir, its summer then & the weather is quite warm.
Reply to this Hey eric....me too had the same question in my head..as i am planning a trip to leh ladakh..enroute Kashmir Kargil....a cousin of mine, who happens to be a major in army and was posted in Kargil during last war..helped me figure out the way...Kashmir is far safe then it used to be 5 years back..and one can always go and see kashmir...though the risk to life is alway persistant...as it is in any case on this earth 😊...
so you can just take a chance...and watch out some awesome scenery over there......
Reply to this Guys.. I was in Kashmir and Ladakh recently. And it is absolutely fine!!!!!!!! Stop it guys!!! All these paranoia. I appreciate replies and comments from people who have been there, not some second hand informations. Thanks though. Thanks very much.

Reply to this Hi Anuj,
My friend had been to Kashmir.
Kashmiris in general are more freindly to people ,if you travel in srinigar and uptill Kargil please do that in private non military vehicle........
Leh will be cool for locals there are pro India..than china ..do visit the border lake its too good and beautiful
If you are a bit adventurous I would suggest do a road trip from Leh- Manali its awesome...
Eric ....For foreigners it might not be a problem but for fellow indians it sometimes become a problem so its natrual for people to be cautious .....
Reply to this Hey Vaibhav thanks for the reply...but leh plans are shelved for the time being...and yeah i did plan that via leh manali highway.
Reply to this Hey folks
I am leaving for india in a week and i got 4-5 weeks of which i plan on spending it all in north india bumming and trekking around (himachal-kashmir-leh etc)
I am wondering should i fly from delhi (where i arrive in india) to srinagar and then make my way back down to manali- shimla etc
OR travel through all the towns and hill stations via bus making my way eventually to kashmir and if so will i have enough time to bus it back to delhi? or should i fly back to delhi from srinagar?
Reply to this Hi Pearce,
4-5 weeks is good amount of time
Delhi - will be a shocker..its currently being readied for CWG.
Its better if you are there for minimum amount of time.
You can take a direct flight either to Srinagar or Leh.
Srinagar is beautiful place but current political situation is not condusive for tourists...there are too many protests and strikes in the kashmir valley.
Its better you take a direct flight to Leh.But do advance booking for hotels for summers are the tourists season there.Do visit the pangongso lake(chinese border) ..awesome lake...its around a 1-2 days travel by road.Leh is as close you will get to tibet culture. You can spent close to 1 week there doing sight seeing in Leh/Pangogso lake.First 2 days in Leh are to be confined to room and very less activity.Due to High altitude acclimitisation is very necessary.
Then if you are adventourous you can take the leh-Manali road to Manali...this is the most adventurous and dangerous road..breathtaking landscapes on the way too.You will need to check whether the Mountain passes are open and also need to factor the landslides...
But do check the situation of the floods in northern plains ...Punjab/Haryana/Himachal :- before planning a road trip as Leh-Manali-CHD-DELHI route is via Ambala which is currently facing flood situation.
In Northern region you can visit Mcleodganj/Dharamshala...you can take a bus from Manali for these places too.
Incase you are thinking about skipping the road trip you can fly back from Leh to Delhi and may be you can try the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur-Jodhpur trip all the way to Mumbai .And then if you still got time you may go to Goa for 1- 2 days.then can fly out of the country from Mumbai.
For train you can check the irctc website.
regards,
Vaibhav
