Exchanging currency... In departing country or at Home?

I'm flying from Jakarta, Indonesia on May 9th home to America (LAX)... Where should I exchange my currency for the best rate (from Rupiah to Dollar)? In Jakarta? or in Los Angeles?

Hello Jake 😊

You wont be able to change all currencies to US dollars in the US. I would change all but major currencies, before leaving the various countries.

Usually when you exchange your currency for a foreign currency in your own country you lose on the exchange. (Changing money over in your country gives you a worse rate of exchange than in the country you will visit most of the time.)

I think it also works in reverse, if you keep Rupiahs until you get to the US you will get a lower rate. That is if you can actually exchange it in the US without a lot of running around. When I was in Indonesia it was quite a few years ago, I got rid of that currency the first opportunity I had which for me was at the airport. I started in Bali, Denpasar, I got a second chance to get rid of it in Jakarta on a 2-3 hour break between flights.

You can spend it down and only change enough dollars to see you through from day to day.

Good luck. Reply to this

Exchanging currency at your home country helps. There are many means of easy foreign currency conversion</a>. There are many online currency converter portals like Travelex India which offer you foreign currency at the best rates. Reply to this

I think if you able to convert currency in your country that would be best. Because when you going to convert currency in visiting country you will get lower rate. Reply to this

It's important to exchange some money before you travel. You will likely see the advice that it is better to exchange currency in the country you visit and it's usually right. However, you need to have money prepared for when you land. There will be some travel costs, between landing at the destination and can change money again, where there are a lot of problems can arise. Is a good idea to have a little money in hand, including some small money and coins if possible, so that you're ready for anything. Reply to this
