I just did a trip Thailand-Laos-Thailand. The return trip was on an overnight train which was very reasonably priced -- around 600 baht (one way) from Nong Kai (Thailand) to Bangkok. 2nd class, air-conditioned, and quite comfy. Took around 12 hours. Don't know whether there are direct trains from Malaysia. I do know that there are overnight trains from the Thai-Malaysia border to Bangkok. Hope that helps. Reply to this

hello ... i went to redang island, perhentian island and lang tengah island in peninsular malaysia last year, i made arrangement online to .my and it turned out to be the best vacation i ever had!! the beaches are very clean, very relaxing and still very much unpolluted. The people in that travel agent is very experienced, we all get to do some snorkeling and diving. The view underwater is unbelievable!! I'm so glad i found these people, because they are very nice and price also reasonable, in fact i think i got more than i expected ... i would definitely use their service again in the future :-)
