i'm down in costa rica actually on the nicoya peninsula. i was going to volunteer at rainsong wildlife sanctuary, but it was awful, disorganized, and scary. i'm here for a few weeks and was looking for new volunteering opportunities that are actually volunteering (and not having to pay to work for free).

does anyone have any ideas or websites i can take a look at? i'm open to volunteer work in almost any part of the country, but i prefer it to be volunteer work with animals. or if anyone has any suggestions of what i can do for the next few weeks on a slim to nil budget (since i planned on volunteering and not spending a whole lot of money).

i can pay for my own accomodations and food, but suggestions for cheap programs including meals and/or accomodations are welcome

thanks a ton for any help i can get!

Hello Matt

You could check the Classifieds Forum. Some volunteer organisations which dont charge fees or charge a small amount for living costs advertise there.

Try Animal Jobs Direct - there is a volunteer with animals section and there are many places needing voluntary help: http://www.animal-job.co.uk/voluntary-work-with-animals.html

Try www.ecoteer.com. There's a small fee to get started, but I was able to find a lot of opportunities for cheap or free volunteering abroad. They also feature listings according to category: ecotourism, conservation, humanitarian, teaching, etc. I used them in March to hook up with this ecolodge in Costa Rica and had a great experience. They paid for accommodations and three meals a day. They even gave me a $75/month stipend for general living expenses. Usually you have to pay for airfare and other transportation to and from the place, but this website targets opportunities that offer free food and accommodations. Also, as I know you're looking for work with animals, search the conservation listings and you should find plenty. Good luck!
