As you may know, the bears hang out on the tundra near Churchill as they wait for the ice to freeze on Hudson Bay. | There are limited options to choose from as far as tours go, so make sure to call ahead and see if there's any spots left (these tours often get booked out as early as August, so hope there's been some cancellations!). The safest and easiest way to see the bears is by a tour, because then you're either in the tundra buggies or in a safe viewing area. Polar bears are NOT cuddly cute creatures but very dangerous predators, so while you might happen to see one in the distance from town, you can also expect to hear gunshots to scare them off. The tours and guides know where to go to spot the bears, and at this time of year, you don't really have to worry about not seeing them on the tours. You'll get your photos as long as you listen to the tour guides. (I applied for a job at the Northern Studies Centre, and while I still haven't been to Churchill, they're my source of information) The only two ways into Churchill are train and plane...both expensive but as far as preferences, it depends on your time schedule and what type of travel you prefer. I've heard Thompson has a good artic museum, but no advice other than that. Good luck, and I look forward to seeing some bear photos! At the fuel staions I know that they had wire cages around the doors to protect humans from bears that would wait outside the door for a person to walk through. Lunch, hot from the oven. ;D | It´s a difficult thing to cordinate, and it would be expensive, but it could be done. :) WorldOfMagic Ann Castro Post Count: 10 Msg: #5 59 weeks ago, November 7th 2008 | The last time I saw a Polar bear wass......well I've actually never seen one :( lol | NCW Neil Wright Post Count: 9 Msg: #6 59 weeks ago, November 9th 2008 | I was born in the same province that Churchill is in. I have never been up there but I hear from a lot of travelers that it's quite satisfying to go on the tours. | caribou et guedille au nez Jess Post Count: 5 Msg: #7 59 weeks ago, November 10th 2008 | well...I keep this on mind for the next year, or if I reach Alaska...i was planning to stay as a volunteer in the Churchill research center as you can stay there for almost 3 weeks and i think you can enjoy all the nature around and maybe...:) | OJ Oliver Johnston Post Count: 52 Msg: #8 58 weeks ago, November 18th 2008 | Friends of mine from northern Newfoundland (St. Anthony) tell me they sometimes see polar bears who drift over on ice floes. Labrador would no doubt have polar bears as well. Of course you can also find them in any of the Canadian territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut). | caribou et guedille au nez Jess Post Count: 5 Msg: #9 58 weeks ago, November 18th 2008 | Hey, cheers for the additional information. Labrador?! interresting, i will have to make some investigations:) | PA Leslie Pierre-Alexandre Post Count: 881 Msg: #10 55 weeks ago, December 4th 2008 | Hi guys, that's definitively on my wish list...can you see the bears and the northern lights at the same time? | Peter swissmaple World Citizen, aka Mél Post Count: 66 Msg: #11 55 weeks ago, December 6th 2008 | Northern lights depend on many factors, but they are most visible Sept-Oct and March-April. | Polar bear season in Churchill tends to be late October into November. So, yes if you're lucky! PA Leslie Pierre-Alexandre Post Count: 881 Msg: #12 55 weeks ago, December 7th 2008 | Thanks a lot for the great news...so if I undersntad well...end of October...I can be lucky to see both at the same time...or miss both of them at the same time...that's a challenge...but eyh, I'm a lucky guy so now I just need to plan!...and be lucky... | Peter Number of Users: 7 | Number of Posts: 12 | ||||||||||||||||||||
