hey greg, ive found the buses in mexico great. you can get basically anywhere for pretty cheap. There is a big range of buses, from first class with recliners etc which good for long trips, to colectivo vans that take you cheaply for short distances, eg good to visit destinations surrounding a town, cheaper than normal bus and often faster.
only take second class buses if not in a rush, they stop everywhere, and take the free roads (opposed to the toll roads), but get to see more etc, also better if want to talk to locals.
The costs obviously vary a bit depending on bus types, the nicer 1st class buses are bout $50 pesos (i think about $5 US) an hour eg queretaro to mexico costs ~$180pesos and takes 3 an half hours.
Also on mexican school holidays each bus has a few seats reserved for students which are half price....not sure if you study but it is a good saving for long trips if have student card.
Another thing the bus drivers seem to like there buses icey and cold, no matter the weather, so take a jumper!!! Hope that helps!
