I was there in November and I stayed in a reasonable hotel along the subway. The station is Da Wang Lu and it's only 5 minutes walk from the station. Having a hardtime remembering the name of the hotel though.

It's only 10 minutes to Tian An Men Square. You must visit President Mao's memorial. It's free but you can't take picture or stay long. Worth going and you will know why after you have been there. Reply to this

Hi bluestone. I can reccomend the Lusongyuan Hotel, just north of the forbidden city which i have stayed at twice and wrote about in this blog entry. It is a really nice old hutong residence that has been converted into a hotel which has cheap dorm accomodation as well as the more upmarket stuff. Its a bit hard to find and most taxi drivers had never heard of it, but I was able to manage ok with the help of the map and directions in the lonely planet. Good luck!! Reply to this
