Off to Thailand on 1st Aug, never been before and travelling alone so after some pearls of wisdom!!

I'm flying into Bangkok and doing a tour for the first week. The 3 weeks that follow have not been planned yet so if anyone has any suggestions or things they would like to pass on, i'd really appreciate it.

I'd love to go over to Cambodia for a week but am not sure if this will be possible.

Thank you in advance

Hello Kelly 😊

Since travelling is subjective and I dont know you it is difficult to suggest things you would like in SE Asia.

I think the South East Asia on a Shoestring guide by Lonely Planet may be a good idea for you. It covers Thailand, Cambodia and the other SE Asian countries all in one book. It gives information about things to do, visas, accomodation, safety..... It is available in most book shops around the world for around 30 Euros.

I see no reason why it would not be possible for you to go to Cambodia for a week. Lots of travellers go to Cambodia from Thailand without many difficulties.

Thanks Mel thats great. Really appreciate any advice.

From what I have read, Northern Thailand looks amazing, can you suggest anything to see/anywhere to stay there?

Hi Kelly;

There's so much to see and do around there that it entirely depends on what you like to do. You can easily spend the whole time in Thailand and not get bored or you could try and squeeze in as much as possible. It all depends on what you like doing.

Bangkok has got great shopping and dining, and the surrounding countries are more adventurous. I'd go for the adventure but it is your trip not mine. I just spent 6 weeks in Bangkok (not vacation) and I regret I didn't go over to Cambodia...

Thanks for the info guys. How much money should i be looking at spending?? Im looking to stay in hostels rather than nice hotels and want to ddo bangkok, the south and the north so im assuming my travl costs will take a chunk of my budget. do you think £500 for 4 weeks is too little?.....i have already booked and paid for my first weeks accomodation

I am not sure what hostels cost in Thailand. 500 pounds is about $ 1,000, isn't it? Knowing what hotels cost (not much) I'd say you can swing it on a $ 1,000, especially if your first week is already paid for.

Mel seems to have a lot of info on Thailand, I think she'll have a better answer for you. Reply to this

In SE Asia I think an OK average buget for a backpacker would be around 20 Euros per day. Thailand being the least expensive would be around 10 to 15 Euros per day. I stayed in double rooms with my daugher in Bangkok on and around the Khao San Road for 3 and 4 Euros per night. We got beach huts for 3 to 6 Euros per night. Basic double hotel rooms in other parts of the country cost us around 3 Euros per night. These were the cheapest available but even so out of Bangkok and Phukett there were attached bathrooms with our rooms so the cheapest places are more than OK.

I think £500 should be enough for 4 weeks. Me and my daugher went to Thailand together last year twice for a month each time. Each time we spent only 500 Euros between us for the 30 days.

Travel costs dont have to be much. You can get all the way down South from Bangkok on the VIP airconditioned bus for around 20 Euros and that is almost a 20 hour journey. Bus travel is very inexpensive in Thailand. Travel 3rd class and it is even cheaper.
