NZ and Thailand PACKING

How to pack minimally for two totally diff. climates in one bag??

We are planning a six-monthish trip to Thailand and New Zealand. We'll be in Thailand first for two months or so, and then be heading to NZ. In NZ, we'll have a car, and far more security. But in Thailand, we'll be on our own in hostels etc., with little security. Everything we've read says to bring as little as possible, and we only want to bring one bag each, but we're wrestling with how to maximize our space. We'll need clothes for a very hot climate, and then subsequently a more moderate one, but it feels silly to lug cooler-climate clothing all over Thailand with us. Should we just pack a few warmer things? Our budget is tight so we don't really want to buy a lot in NZ. We thought about having a package sent to us in NZ, but that seems slightly hairy too. We would have to guess when it was arriving and be beholden to staying somewhere until it did. Advice? Reply to this

Hello Sarah 😊

In Thailand the air conditioning on buses and trains and in some restaurants is sweater needing temperature. Also on planes it can get very cold. So maybe taking a sweater along with you would be useful for Thailand as well as NZ.
How cold will it be in NZ when you are there anyway? Maybe your Thailand clothes and a sweater will be enough??

Depends where you are coming from and what climate you are used to ; as well as what time of year you go to NZ!

NZ in winter is freezing at times - into the negatives degrees! Therefore you need warm clothes.

Best advice I would say is either take warm from home and pay for storage in Thailand or buy in Thailand before you leave.

Summer in NZ need jeans and jersey for night only.
Winter in South Island, the full monty!
Winter in North Island - a good raincoat and jeans and jersey!

I wouldn't say sending a package to NZ would be slightly hairy - shouldn't be a problem .

Take light cloths and a jacket to Thailand, and not too much of them. (raincoat would be helpful ATM)

Then right before you fly out to NZ, buy heaps of warm cloths (they will be on special anyway if its the summer) and hit NZ prepared.

They will be freezing brass monkeys in NZ till at least November this year, dependant upon where you are going. Reply to this

Sarah,

What time of year are you traveling??

Possibly one of the best peices of clothing to have is Merino which NZ specialises in.
It's very lightweight, wool, warm but also breathable, very quick drying and never smells - just perfect for traveling! And can be worn almost any time of the day/night. I'd recommend picking up a couple of these. They work like thermal underwear - but are WAY better.

Make sure when you are buying that you look for the 100%!m(MISSING)erino as a lot of them are mixed thread, but you really want 100%! (MISSING) One of the good chain stores "Glassons" have these quite cheap during winter months - probably find them now until about Sep/Oct. In the summer months (which can still be great to have at night) you may need to look in Survenior stores.

I'm from NZ - so feel free to ask questions!

A.
