We were on the homeward stretch and our journey took us via Lima. From what I had read, there wasn’t much to recommend the city, however I had read that the culinary scene was a world leader, and good food is always exciting. We arrived mid-afternoon and my overwhelming impression was of greyness – grey skies, grey road and as we made our way to the hotel, grey seas. The perfect antidote was the variety and rich flavours of the local cuisine. I had stumbled across The Lima Gourmet Company by chance on an internet search and as luck would have it they offered an evening tour. The time frame couldn’t have been more perfect – we arrived at our hotel at 3.30pm, pick up was at 4.30pm and for the next five hours we were ... read more

This is my last entry from South America :( As the title says, its the end of my South America travels, I have had so much fun, seen and done so many things and places and met some genuinely lovely people. But before I summarise, I'll finish my adventure for ye, 5th May 2015, Puno Peru Leaving Bolivia and heading to Peru, we went though another land border crossing, this one at least made sense, in that the Bolivia exit stamps were given in Bolivia and then we walked across the border to the next building where we entered Peru, it was then back on the bus and on to Puno to see the other side of lake Titicaca and to spend a night as an island local. Early the next morning, Ellie and my self ... read more

Sarah: With a three hour flight delay under our belts, we made it to Lima a bit later than planned. We've been very lucky with avoiding delays so far so mustn't grumble. Everyone else on our flight was acting like they'd never been delayed before in their lives. I remember hours sat in airports as a child waiting for delayed planes (maybe time was just stretched though and it always felt like they were delayed?). Anyway, I'm sure travel is a lot more reliable nowadays! It was past lunch time when we arrived and food was on the brain so first things first we checked out the facilities in the hostel kitchen, then headed out to grab some lunch. We found a little cafe with a sarnie for Nick and a spinach pie for me. They ... read more

No, I didn’t misspell the title. When I last updated, we had just arrived in Lima after several adventure-packed days in Cusco. I’m currently sitting at home in sunny Bourbonnais, Illinois, but I would be remiss if I didn’t finish a final blog post detailing my time spend in Lima, Peru. La Ciudad Grande Lima is big. Bigger than Chicago. If you’re a consistent reader of this blog, you will know that I do not like big cities. Contrarily, my two traveling partners LOVE big cities. We took a taxi from the airport to our hostel and I just looked out the window at all of the traffic, huge buildings, flashing lights, and droves of people everywhere and I immediately wanted to go back to Cusco – the cultural, scenic, slower-moving, smaller city we had just ... read more

Today was pretty much a travel day as most of the group would make our way back to Lima. However, there were 4 of us who were heading out to the Amazon jungle for a few days. We said our goodbyes to Maree and Beverly as well as the Finns, Tarja and Juha as they all had early flights out to the Amazon jungle. Eventually, those of us who remained made our way to the Cuzco airport for our quick 1 hour flight on Avianca back to Lima. Later that evening, Kevin and I took the 6 of us that remained over to El Parquetito, a restaurant that Kevin and I had our first Peruvian meal just over a week ago. Afterwards, the 6 of us decided to get a little dancing in. We went into ... read more

After struggling to get through this last day of work, Kevin and I were finally on our way to our long anticipated trip to Peru. We signed up for this 8 day trip with G Adventures about 2 months ago and these past 2 months I have been filled with excitement to finally get to see Machu Picchu. Kevin's girlfriend drove us to the airport Wednesday night for our 12:15 am flight on LAN Airlines directly to Lima. The LAN flight was very smooth and surprisingly, I was able to get a good amount of sleep during the flight. 8 hours later, we landed in Lima for my first time in South America. Obtaining our luggage and going through customs was by far the smoothest I have ever experienced and within 30 minutes of landing, we ... read more

Geo: -11.5308, -77.1806On the trip over we saw an article in the airline magazine about El Pan de la Chola in Miraflores. It was listed as one of "25 Bakeries you should visit before you die." Since we are in town, this seemed the obvious place to go for breakfast. As we squinted up at the menu board and tried to decipher the options, a young man walked up to us and offered to tell us all about the offerings. We both recognized him as the owner-- kind of fun. I ordered some really robust semolina bread that was toasted and served with two salted and peppered avocado halves and olive oil. Mike got another hearty peasant bread with butter and a marmalade that was very rich in color and redolent of molasses. Before we left, ... read more

30th August-So this morning I bid farewell to the gorgeous USA sniff sniff! Note to self....do not go out drinking prior to a flight, you will almost barf on take off! As usual the airlines fed me well and provided good movies. Although I was slightly devastated when I wanted to finish a movie on the second flight and they didn't have individual tvs :( I got into Lima in Peru at about 8pm and began to search for my taxi. There was a big sign saying 'official taxi' so naturally I went towards it. As I was paying the $55 I noticed there were about 4 other taxi desks and as I got to my taxi which was a fancy black SUV I realised I had been duped....oh well, you live and learn. After two years of saving and six months of planning here I am - on my one year adventure around South America, China and India! We (me and my partner Alex) decided to start in Peru, Lima. At that time it made sense! But as every backpacker knows plans and routes change. So on 15th of March 2014 we landed in Lima airport. First impression of Lima - gritty and noisy! We traveled by taxi to our hostel in Miraflores neighbourhood. We booked double room as it was near my birthday and we knew that most of our journey we will sleep in crowd dormitories. As we arrived early we needed to wait couple hours for room to be ready. We sat in the garden patio and chat with other backpackers. I felt overwhelmed as they ... read more
