ok so again the photos will follow but at the moment we haven´t had them written to cd and as we can no longer plug in our battery charger we thought we had better try and save batteries!!
we had a couple of hours in the hotel before it was time to go and take our flight over the lines. they can never predict how long you will be waiting to go up and when we got there at 10 we were told that we should come back later as the first flight had only just managed to go up and so there were lots of people waiting. this wasn´t a problem as we first went and did the tour of a cemetery we would normally have done after. the cemetery invloved walking rounds lots of tombs which have been opened in the past by grave robbers, so all the offerings have been stolen. the local govenment had constructed roofs over them to proctect from the wind, they are in the middle of the desert so not sure there would have been rain!!! we had a guide who was taking us round and we looked in about 10 graves, all
of which looked pretty much the same but he was quite enthusiastic about all of them and was urging us to take photos, we felt weird doing that though as they are just collections of bones!!!!! they also had a building there holding three mummies which were well perserved but this time not frozen. two of them were quite disturbing as they were children and although they were mostly still covered up, you could see their toenails peeking out, just confirmed really how small they were. with the other mummies its hard to tell as when they are wrapped they are curled up really tightly in the foetal position.
after finishing we called at the airport again but they still weren´t ready so we went to a pottery where a guy explained the process they used to make pots and we also went to a gold plant, where a crazy guy expalined the process they used to extrct the gold. they use mercury in the process and i think he´d spent too long too close to it!!!!
we got back to the airport and after a short time they were ready to take the first lot of us up.
another of the graves
this one has 3 sections to it, showing that 3 generations of the same family were buried in it. the planes are all really tiny and only hold 5 people. worked out ok as Caz had to go back to the hotel as she was feeling really bad. the cold that was going round the rest of us hit her really really hard and she really just didn´t know what to do with herself!! Heath went up in the first lot if people and the rest of us waited under the impression we would be going up shortly. the flight was about 45mins long and we were still waiting when the others got back, we had got bored and hungry waiting and all of us had eaten some crisps, so wasn´t good news when the others came over and asked we hadn´t eaten had we as we would regret it! we sat there for quite a while before we asked and were told we would be going up soon. we were called and given a sheet with the order of the lines on so we would be able to spot them easier, on the back was a certificate which they signed for us to show we had been up. we climbed into the plane and we all felt a
bit nervous cos of the size of the plane and what the others had said! we strapped ourselves in and put on the headphones. the pilot started up the engine and it made a huge noise, we taxied down the runway and were waiting for quite a while for the ok for us to go. the take off was actually quite smooth and we had about a ten minute flight before we got to the first set of lines. when we go there it was a bit worrying as he turned round to point it out on the sheet and wasn´t looking where he was going!!! he also used the tips of the wings to point out where the figures were so we spent a lot of the flight flying at quite a big angle. what made us feel worse was that he circled over them in both directions so people on each side could see out their window without craning to see over to the other side. at first its really hard to see the shapes as they are far smaller than we expected!!! whenever we got over a new one the pilot pointed out which one and showed
Kim
she got quite friendly with this cactus! us where we could see it, which was good but helped us feel that little bit more sick!!! i actually didn´t feel too bad but a girl called nic was in the front and she felt quite sick by the time we got out!!! we were almost glad to get to the end and to have seen them all as they look good but it meant we would be landing soon!!! the landing was surprisingly very smooth which was good!!! we then went back to the hotel in the bus. the only thing in Nazca is the lines so there really isn´t anything else to do there so we spent the afternoon there half of us sitting in one of the rooms, the other half sleeping!!! was quite annoying there as there were tvs in some of the rooms but they couldn´t get the american channels!! just to re-assure you that we haven´t spent the whole time watching tv but it would have been good then as there was nothing else we could do!!! we eventually got an i-pod and speakers out and Kim managed to scare another couple who were sitting across the courtyard and could see her through
Vic and Gabby
Before the flight in the back of the plane the window doing some weird dancing as she was a bit hyper as we hadn´t really burnt off much energy, they looked quite disturbed!!!
that night we went into the town centre to eat tea, and we were told every car is a taxi but when me, Heath, Vic and Katie came to get one home we didn´t seem to be able to find one!!! we didn´t fancy just hailing any car so wanted to wait for one which said taxi on the top!!! we weren´t impressed when we got back to the hotel and found the others who had left after us were already there, think they chose the right place to try and get a taxi from and we chose the wrong one!!!!
we had an early start the next morning getting a bus to Pisco, on the way stopping for Pisco tasting and sand boarding.
