My intrepid missus and myself have purchased what is known as a boleto turistica in Cusco. This has so far permitted us to view a variety of art type museums that amply demonstrate that althought the Spaniards were pretty good at a number of things in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, tasteful interior decorating and art were not factors amongst them. Much gold, pious looking christian types and carved wooden furniture with an unnecessary number of knobbly bits. THe good news is cameras arent allowed, so there´s nothing to endure from that. THe ticket also gave us entry to Pisac, about thirty kilometers from Cusco. Pisac is a royal estate, fortress to protect an intersection between valleys and a ceremonial site, but besides that ive not found out an aweful lot about it. This is partly ... read more

Today I went to the Sacred Valley of the Inca’s with Ed, Dave and Nadia. It was amazing and only a taste of what Manchu Pichu is going to be like. The terraces are massive, not like the small flimsy looking terraces that they currently make and use. The ruins were amazing the way the Inca fit the rock together with out mortar. I climbed to the top of a small peak behind the main citadel it was a nice little 4-low 5th class scramble. The rock is really sticky! I would love to do some real rock and mountain climbing down here, hopefully next trip. After wandering around for a few hours we headed back down to Pisca for lunch and wandered thru the Sunday market. After a little haggling we hired a cab to ... read more

I woke very early today... while wandering why I had set my alarm for 5am, I remembered that today, we had planned to seek out the hot water springs of 'Lares'. Our first move was to take a bus to Urubama, and then on to the town of 'Calca' (halfway between Urubama and Pisaq). Heading to Calca bus terminal, we found a potato truck, who's driver said he was going to Lares, and would let us come along for 5 soles. Lares is about a two to three hour drive along a mountain dirt track... it really was a special road, like the kind of twisting mountain path you see in movies (but without the safety barriers)... really spectacular views! Lares itself is really small village... arriving there really felt like being in the middle of ... read more

On Friday night I met up with Alex in Cuzco, to go and listen to a traditional Peruvian concert. Some of the singing was in Quechua (the Inca language), and there were some interesting instruments, including charangos and what I can only describe as 'coiled snake horns'. On Saturday I bought a 'bolletto touristico', (a ticket that gets you into all the main tourist attractions in the Sacred Valley), and set out to explore the four main Inca sites near Cuzco. I caught a Pisaq-bound bus out to the furthest ruins ´Tambo machay' (ceremonial baths), and walked back to Cuzco, stopping at the other ruins on the way. The second site 'Puca Pucara' is a small hilltop complex. On my way down to the third site 'Qenko' I met some fellow gringos, and we set out ... read more

On Monday, Anna came along to see the school. The day went pretty well, and I got through more than planned with most of the classes. On Tuesday Angelica, the Peruvian English teacher was on a course in Cuzco, so I had to take the classes alone. This proved to be quite a challenge as my first time teaching solo, but things went ok. In the evening, I tried to help Melissa out with her maths homework. They´d set some pretty difficult work, it was very reminiscent of the' surds and indices's' stuff we did at the start of our A level course, and she´s only thirteen! I can´t imagine kids of that age in the Uk being expected to do that level of maths... on the other hand, she didn´t seem to understand it. On ... read more

This Sunday, myself and Anna had booked to go Horse Riding, with a chap from Ollantay known as 'Mario'. A guide (not Mario) turned up at our house in the morning with two horses. After resolving some initial complications (the guide not speaking English, us not speaking much Spanish, and both of us being slightly concerned that the guide didn´t appear to have a horse- were we going alone?) we mounted our horses. Our trip was to visit the Inca Quarry, up a mountain-side near Ollantay. The horses seemed reasonably well behaved to start with. I didn´t really have a clue have to control it... although Anna was able to explain the basics that she had learnt on her last trip. We left Ollantay and joined a rocky mountain track leading up the hillside. My horse ... read more

Myself and Anna decided it would be a nice idea to take Hullio (a lad from Cuzco who lives with Lola) and Mellisa (one of the kids from the School, who sometimes works for Lola), to some of the sights in the local area. We decided to head for the Inca Terraces at 'Moray' and then to the Salinas close to Urubama. Originally, the plan was to walk across country from the first to the second... but it was quite late before we got going, and since none of us had a clue where to go (maps seem to be a scarce commodity out here), we decided to bus and taxi it with a small amount of walking. The Terrace's at Moray are pretty impressive... Many concentric circles in a similar arrangement to an amphitheatre. Each ... read more

After the marching was over on Tuesday, the school had the rest of the week off as holiday. I was planning to go to Arequipa in the south of Peru and then on to Nazca. Unfortunately, living in Peru caught up with me, and on Tuesday evening I felt very feverish. I wasn´t any better by Wednesday, so I asked TAPA to take me to a Doctor. I had to have an injection (in my backside, yes it hurt!) to bring my fever under control. After some tests, they decided that I´d got a couple of stomach infections. After the doctor had explained the 10-day course of antibiotics I needed to take, I realised I might not be going to Arequipa in the evenning after all. I felt fine on Thursday, which was good... but I ... read more

The long expected marching day had come... the principle had had the students practising their marching for nearly a week now. Everyone gathered in the school early in the morning. I stood in front of the pupils with the rest of the teachers, which suddenly became rather awkward when they began to sing their national anthem and I didn't know the words! The principle then gave a long speech, of a very nationalist nature from what I could understand. The plaza of Ollantaytambo was completely packed with people, students, teachers, local government, locals, tourists. There were speeches, poems and various recitals of the anthem all morning. The marching began at about 12 noon. I hadn't realised just how many schools there were in this area (knowing of just mine and one other)... but around about 10 ... read more
