So we both ended with the unfortunate event, first it was jo and then me!! Hurray!!!NOT . We haven't even been to more than 1 country, so very unfair... We were thinking that it might have been their cuisine that caused this so we decided ater a day,to have a break from it and got PizzA Hut instead, after that we felt better and it stopped at least in my case😉

In a more serious note in the morning we had a city tour of Arequipa which was very informative. Our guide explained us moreover detail how the town got the name (White City), it was because it was the first city that was inhabited by the white people- the Spanish , because of the white volcanic ash, and Arequipay because in Quetchuan it means it nice lets go there. In Peru its the second largest and most important city after Lima. Arequipans they are very patriotic about their city, they will state first that they are from Arequipa and then that they are Peruvians.

First we had a ride to a viewpoint overlooking some farming terraces from where we had great views of the 3 volcanoes that surround this city. The Names are Chachani , El Misti and Picchu picchu. El Misti is the female and the wife of Chachani , and Picchu Picchu is the bf of El Misti. Its funny that the layout of the 3 has El Misti in the middle of the other 2,and suprisingly only the female volcano is active.

The second part of the tour included a visit to one of the most important, lets say neighborhoods at this point of Arequipa. This neighborhood had obvious influence from the Spanish era, as the habitants stil retained the flower pots outside on the walls. The reason of going to that area is that the local church has a mixture of Baroque and Inca influence. Next to the corinthian columns there were Inca pediments where there was the passionfruit, grape, some other local produces that Incas were proud of and most importantly the puma. The Incas believed in 3 gods the sun, the earth , and the underworld. The animal that represents the sun is the condor- the messenger , the puma of the earth and the snake of the underworld.

After that we concluded with a visit to the Santa Catalina Monastery, its size 3 whole blocks. The nuns that were there in the beginning of the century had no choice whether they wanted to be nuns or not, they wer send there by their parents to get a proper education, and basically to protect them from a bad life. It ws mostly daughters of noblemen, and this is obvious by the dowry they brought with them. The dowry money were the entrance fees, which were up to 1000 gold coins. Most of the girls had their own ¨appartment¨and sometimes a servant. In their kitchens they even stored guinea pigs, not as pets, but to eat them, people here still do!OMG
