Family and friends! I made it. For the FIRST time in my travels every single flight was on time, IIIII myself was on time and didn't miss any flights either. They say that helps. No pilots on strike, no paying for baggage or baggage weight, no getting mugged, no bad taxis, no panic attacks, hah nothing to complain about. I must admit I am a little homesick. However, that's to be expected and I know it will get better. Even though I still don't have a solid basis for my exact responsibilities, I still feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. I'll be working with the girls on their English. They attend a very poor school and their English is very very far behind for their ages. Their ages... they are anywhere from ... read more

Our first encounter with motion sickness was flying over the Nazca lines in a tiny aeroplane. Luckily, neither of us was actually sick, although I managed to miss half the lines preventing this! They´re on an epic scale, and the people who decided to draw them did a pretty good job considering they didn´t have an aeroplane to see how they actually looked! From Nazca, we went straight to Chivay, over a pass of 4800 m, slightly stupid, and consequently we´ve both felt the altitude. Going to stock up on the old coca leaves before we get to Cusco and La Paz so that we´ll be acclimatised! Chivay was this brilliant little town near the Colca Canyon which had very clean air and pimped auto-rickshaws. We spent a few days chilling there and going to the ... read more

As many dear readers are aware, we have been struck by the beauty of Sucre in Bolivia. Plans have been thought of how to move there and live as there could not be any city as beautiful in the world, let alone South America. Guess what – we have found one. Arequipa is a city in south west Peru (you have not been charged for this information) surrounded on one side by three snow capped mountains and on the other by a massive volcano called Misti. The main area of town is Palaza Armas which has a vista to match any anywhere. On top of that is the weather. Apparently it has four bad days of weather a year. On situations such as these, there are a few clouds in the sky. Even your correspondent has ... read more

Monday 5th September After another delicious breakfast of cereal and bread rolls, we set off in to town, not to do anything special, but just to have a look around. We ended up climbing to the top of the Morro where Arica flies their flag and also has their Christ the Redeemer Statue. It provides a magnificent view of the city and the ocean. The climb down is harder than the climb up, as it is so steep. You feel as though you could topple over at any second. Tuesday 6th Sept Arrived in Ariquipa this afternoon after an 8 hr bus ride that should have taken 6. We had a car take us to the border of Peru to do our paperwork, and then it dropped us at the bus station Tacna, where a very ... read more

Arequipa may be a city of close to one million people, a number that usually gives an image of a chaotic and busy city, in Arequipa however, that it not the case. Arequipa is a perfect introduction to Peru. I arrived with a Dutch girl, Ilonka, in the early hours of September 1st 2011 and checked ourselves into a fantastic little hostel, Daniela Piccola, falling asleep until the a sensible morning time arrived. On waking and vacating the hostel for the day we were stunned to see the pulsating beauty that radiates from the streets of this blinding city. The buildings lining the central plaza and it's extending streets are clean and white, proudly reflecting the suns powerful rays. It is the student capital of the country and an optimistic independent city. To cap off the ... read more

Arequipa is the place to get stranded at when your hostel manager screws up your reservation for your bus out of the city. It's definitely the best place we've stopped at in Peru so far. Great night life, great pastries, great prices, great gringos, great views, great everything. Of course, there are still sketch areas and people, but every city has those. As soon as we were dropped off at the bus station in Arequipa from Ica, we found a nice man offering us maps and information about the city. He even offered us a free ride to the Plaza and suggested a hostel that had everything we needed at a reasonable price. It turned out that he was the manager of the hostel he brought us to-- shocking. The place included breakfast, wi-fi, hot showers, ... read more

Ah...civilisation! Still enjoying the novelty of it! We headed out last night to Zig Zag....reputedly the best restaurant in Southern Peru. So the glad rags went on (well...the nearest that we have to them) and we headed out for dinner. Their speciality is Peruvian Alpine and sizzling cuts on volcanic rock mmmm. For starters we learnt that Peru should not be famed for its cheese - their attempt at Roquefort was admirable, but the pale generic cheese was not worth it! As the mains approached we were donned with a bib...seriously. This appeared to be regardless of what you ordered and I´m not sure entirely necessary! For mains we had sizzling meat and fish on the volcanic stone. I finally caved and tried the alpaca...oh my goodness it was sensational! Think I´m a convert from now! ... read more

OK...so we´re not quite in Arequipa...but I can´t find the location on the drop down menu (probably due to my geography rather than anything else!). Today we crossed the border from Boliva to Peru. Fortunately the strikes and border closures which were blocking the roads appeared to have been settled. Think that it was based on Trout in Lake Titicaca...but fish is on the menu and the roads are open so they´ve obviously come to some form of agreement! We left the Isla de Sol this morning in the snow. Absolutely beautiful island but the views were definitely better the the blazing sunshine yesterday! The Island was bizarrely run by children - one gathered us from the port, another booked us into the hostel and two others served us dinner. Not sure if it was Take ... read more

Friday 20th May - Thursday 26th May We didn’t hang around long in the hustle and bustle of the big city La Paz, heading to the shores of Lake Titicaca (the largest high altitude lake in the world) and a small friendly town called Copacabana, our final stop in Bolivia before crossing into Peru. The sun was shining and the town instantly felt like a local beachside holiday destination, albeit a little rough around the edges. The main street was buzzing with people wandering around, browsing the tourist markets for jewellery, llama fleeces and other nic nacs or sitting at one of the many outdoor cafés. We checked into a terrific wooden cabana overlooking the inland sea, which gave us a great place to relax, and at Bolivian prices it was considerably affordable. Lying in the ... read more
