Cruising through Montañita
We decided to take a bus from with the 2 swiss girls that we met during our jungle trip, to Montańita, a small surf village off the coast of Ecuador that is known to have a wild night life. We found that to be true when we arrived at midnight after a LONG trip from Bańos, which included having to switch buses at a crazy chaotic bus terminal in Guayaquil, and being stranded in Salinas before taking a cab to our destination of Montańita. We arrived in Montańita to a argentinian hippy with dreads greeting us and offering to take us to a nearby hostel. We dropped our bags in our rooms and went out to get some ribs at a nearby sandy beach-hut restaurant. Walking through Montańita at night was crazy at first, dozens of bamboo restaurants, bars, hostels, street vendors and loud music blasting from every direction. Reggaeton, salsa, Orishas and Manu Chao seems to be the local choices of music, as we heard it lots during our time there.

It turns out that we arrived at one of the busiest times of the year, at it was a national holiday that weekend so many Guayaquileńos showed up

to party. While eating ribs, Denise and Franzieska spotted Rodrigo, a retired journalist from Chile that they met a few weeks back who owns a great restaurant and hostel in town. He quickly offered us to show us his small hostel, which was much nicer than the place we slept in that first night. The four of us shared a nice room for next few nights with a couple of bunks, a private bathroom, and a private balcony overlooking the main strip with a hammock to rest on. Downstairs was an open common area with more hammocks, surfboards and tables on a sandy floor.

We spent most of our time walking in town, checking out the different arts and crafts, bootleg cds and dvds, little cafés, fire dancers, and basically relaxing. The weather was warm but cloudy the entire time we were there, so we didn’t spend too much time on the beach like we had originally planned. We tried to go surfing one of the days but fate didn’t want us in the water…too many things went wrong that day including Nolan almost losing his board within minutes of jumping in the water, as his strap mysteriously broke

off. That was the final straw so we retreated back into town and hung out some more. We met some Canadians in town, and also made friends we some nice people from Columbia and Guayaquil. We also met a cool Peruvian nomad that made his living making really nice jewelry, so I took advantage of the opportunity to get myself some nice fixins to look all purdy.

During the busy weekend we enjoyed some nice food, fresh juice and lots of dancing and laughing with the locals. The music was blasting at all hours of the day and night, so it was really hard to get good sleep while we were there, especially with the car loads of people who arrived and set up there sound systems to full blast like a mobile dance club. It was all good fun though, it was great to be in such an alive environment, the soul needs that every now and then.
