Travelling towards the north of the continent is a whole different world in itself compared to the southern cone. As mentioned before I went off to the city of Iquique to visit my cousin and her family. Iquique is just an urban oasis full of charm. It is surrounded by the most arid desert in the world, Atacama Desert, and all you can see around the city are huge stripped mountains, massive dunes and the sea. I only spent two days there getting to know the centre with its colourful Victorian buildings still in pristine conditions and the beaches full of surfers. After those two relaxing days, my cousin suggested I go and visit her husband for a couple of days on the Chilean border with Bolivia in the middle of the Andes. He works there ... read more

SO I finally made it to Chile yesterday morning. The bus ride from La Paz was killer but i´m so happy to be here. Yesterday Molly and I spendt most of the day on the beach relaxing and takin in some sun. Getting burnt was inevitable and the backs of my legs resemble ripe tomatoes. Somehow that was the only spot I managed to miss. Iquique is beautiful, old style buildings and centered around its hot sandy beaches. Apparently they´re trying to turn this place into Chile´s number one beach destination and they´re doing a pretty dam good job at it. The surf isn´t great right now so I skipped that but maybe further south we´ll do it. Shopping here is a nightmore. Most of the prices are comparable with those at home so I havn´t ... read more

Next time you´re having a rubbish day at work I wan´t you to consider the life and death of the unfortunate Juanita. Juanita is the most well preserved ice mummy in South America and after 500 years she isn´t looking as bad as she might. Here is a girl raised to the age of 12 and kept pure and innocent for the sole purpose of being sacrificed to appease the mountain gods. When the time was right, Juanita was made to walk some 160 miles from Cuzco to the summit of mount Ampato in terribly difficult conditions. Once there she was starved for a day and , already half dead from the effects of altitude and exposure, was drugged and promptly bludgeoned to death. Next she was buried in a shallow hole with all manner of ... read more

J.P. ... read more

This is combined entry because we spent so little time in each place! Last time we wrote we were in Lima, staying at a lovely hostel with an almost too friendly hostel owner who was saving to go travelling and lived with his mum who had a Miss Haversham room. We then spent a day travelling to Iquique. This involved: - a flight from Lima to Tacna, via Arequipa - a colectivo (taxi that fills up with 5 people before it goes, we were his first 2 passengers so we had to wait about an hour for him to find 3 more!) to Arica just across the border - a bus to Iquique that was delayed so didn't arrive until 2.30am - a moonlight taxi to our hostel Our hostel was lovely - it was a ... read more

After a couple days, I left Arica extremely sunburnt. Why do I always get it into my head not to wear any sunscreen at all?! This made the bus journey to Iquique rather uncomfortable. Iquique has a very nice beach, but there´s not much else to do there. One can see the colonial style buildings everywhere. Antofagasta and La Serena are just regular towns on the coast. I suppose this is a rather uninspired entry, but I was feeling quite uninspired during this period anyway. Chile is more modernized than Peru, and I find the accent to be extremely difficult to understand. Instead of random muts roaming the streets, there are huskies roaming the streets in every town. Instead of hordes of people selling candy and plastic bobbles, there are guys walking around selling bonzai trees ... read more

Spent a couple days in the Coastal town of Iquique (pronounced e-key-kay) in Norther Chile. It was strange to be back in Chile, it seems so normal, and relaxed, after being in Bolivia and Peru. Almost done the week long excursion from Ecuador to Patagonia!!... read more
