We have stayed at this nice hostel in Ushuaia now for 3 nights and it is time to move on, towards the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. To do that we must first exit Argentina into Chile, then exit Chile into Argentina, then exit Argentina again back into Chile. This takes most of a day, waiting at border crossings, carrying all of our stuff into the crossing office to be xrayed, throwing away any open cheese, apples, nuts, fresh vegetables or meats, and so forth. This means that some of our meals are made only with canned food, since there are no stores between our crossing and our next campsite. This evening we camp at a ghost town near the beached wreck of the Barca Ambassador, on the Chilean coast. We aren’t sure of ... read more

Torres Del Paine We first tried to organise our Torres trip from El Calafate in Argentina, but this was unsuccessful. After being ripped off by a nasty woman at a gear rental shop (long story, do not use "El Barraco" rental), we took the bus to Puerto Natales in Chile to organise our trip from there. We stayed in an extremely cheap room, at Hospedaje Olguita, basically a woman's (Olguita's) house with a couple of rooms. She was very friendly, but the bathrooms were not the cleanest we have seen. We rented some camping equipment (tents, cooking equipment, floor mats and waterproof pants) for the 6 days the "W" hike takes. This hike is named the W as a result of the route one walks, basically a W if seen on a map. We waited for ... read more

Legs still soar, +/- 46 hours in different busses, 3 cities and one BEAUTIFUL national park in Chile, then a 5 days in Argentina, in Ushuaia, the most southern city in the world, and back to Chile, just on the verge of taking the 4 day boat ride in the Fiords and the ocean, I am very much behind...But, I´ll try to reconstract the story.... Ingredients: Soar leggs, muscles, knee aches but still works, 1000 times nature, some really cute hostels, geese, ibis, wind like i never experienced, reading Darwin's trip in the Beagle Channel and other places we visited, Tent Kaput!!, some nice hostels, Beagle, Lots of dead trees, Well the highlight was definitely the 6 days trek (actually turned 5 unwantedly...). First day and last were the most beautiful, but in between also lots ... read more

Hoi hoi!

Just got back to Puerto Natales after seven days in Torres del Paine Parque Nacional. Both of us really enjoyed this part of the trip, we had beautiful scenery, got to hike an average of 20 km a day, and met lots of fun people. We started from Lago Amargo, hiked into Camp Las Torres and completed El Circuito going counter-clockwise. We planned for ten days (mostly just in case we had bad weather at John Gardner Pass), but only needed six. The scenery was incredibly varied, although I wish we had seen more wildlife (we did see guanacos and condors on the bus drive into the park). The trails were mostly easy and well-marked. We only really had bad weather going up to the pass (I think it was a 3000 foot elevation gain) and ... read more

Day 656 (14.01.09) Today was our opportunity to prepare for our 5 day trek in the Parque Nacional Torres Del Paine, but before we got to work we filled up on the amazing brekkie the guys at the hostel put on. If breakfast is free in South American hostels it's usually bread and jam. In Erratic Rock you get made-to-order omelettes, homemade bread (in sweet or savoury varieties), yoghurt, cereal, juice and real coffee - superb! Every day at 3pm the guys at our hostel, Erratic Rock, hold a free briefing about trekking in the park and we planned to attend later in the day. Before then we had a walk around town to knock off some of the many jobs we had to do from gluing Marks shoes (again! - the cobbler we took them ... read more

from where i left off.... i need to catch up before i leave again for my next place on interest and get further behind.... we left el calafate a little later than expected due to the long night the night before but we ended up leaving town around noon and driving about 10 hours by car in Chile to a town called puerto natales just outside parque nacional torres del paine.. found a place to stay and called it a night.. it wasnt a very interesting day but at least we got to stop when we wanted as opposed to a bus. it was funny though because we had bought a bunch of food that we planned on eating for lunch dinner and maybe breakfast.. only to find out we couldnt bring any of it into ... read more

Dec 22-31 on the Paine Circuit Transportation to Torres del Paine is really easy to find. The tourism industry is much more organized than i.e. India. Our first day on the trail was beautiful, a little windy, but clear. We got to Camp Seron w/ plenty of time to nap in the sun. The campsites here are very different from the U.S. In the U.S. people tend to look for campsites where they can´t be seen by others. Basically trekking in the U.S. is not a social activity. However, on this trail, the campsite areas are small and you´re forced to share space w/ your neighbors. Also, many of the sites have shelters for hikers, where we could cook dinner and stay out of the rain, which there was a lot of! Day 2 Seron to ... read more

We spent 3 days and 2 nights here and done bits of the famous W trek, which was enough really. We got picked up from our hostel in Puerto Natales and got to the park entrance. We treked 8 hours the first day to the tower base view point which was pretty amazing. We spent the night in the refuge just by the entrance which was nice and cosy. We had dinner there which was good - lamb soup for starter! Boucs and I kept asking the waitress for more and ended up with three portions! We spent the second day treking in the French Valley for 7 hours and camped there the night as it was cheaper than the lodge. By the time we got back from our trek, and by the time Boucs finished ... read more
