The Navimag is a cargo and passenger ferry that sails through the fjords of Chile between Puerto Natales and Puerto Montt in the Chilean Lake District. It’s a 4 day/3 night trip and the Patagonian scenery is stunning with incredible flora and fauna, mountains, still waters and the occasional open sea choppy crossing. Many other travellers that I’d met on the Torres trek ( The Frenches and Holland) were also booked on the trip and after a bit of a wait in the reception area we boarded around 9pm ( the cargo boards first) and scambled to find our cabins and arranged to meet in the bar later (always a good idea!). I was booked in a BB cabin with 4 bunks, a window and shared bathroom which was just outside the cabin. It was comfortable and there were only three of us so we had a bit of extra space. I did a little bit of unpacking and organising the little space I had and then headed up to the bar on the bridge deck and had a few cans of the local brew with Holland and the Frenches. There were so many other travellers on board and we would
soon meet many of them over the coming days. The boat was due to leave the next morning at 6am and we planned to get up early to catch the sunrise and early part of the journey.....
The next morning was quite cloudy so I had a lie in and managed to get up to the top deck around 10am. After a few hours the skies cleared and we spent most of the day Chilling on the deck, drying out our walking boots and meeting other travellers. Reah from Denmark was travelling around South America for 3 months and was heading in the same direction as the rest of us. She had a great card game called 500 that she introduced us to and we spent many hours in the bar playing this!! Otherwise the time was spent spotting whales, enjoying the cafeteria food and local beers, reading and listening to music and swapping travel stories and plans with everyone. Many were heading to Bariloche in Argentina after (famous for its mountains and lakes and chocolate) so I thought why not its as good a place as any to head for!!
For the last evening we had a
bit of a celebration with one American lady getting out her bottle of Tequila which started off everyone else rummaging through their bags for the weirdest alcohol they could find including test tube vodka and pisco. The sunset was stunning. The next morning we arrived in at our destination and loaded up our backpacks for the walk to the bus station in order to catch the bus to Bariloche. We had to wait a while as we just missed a bus but finally got the tickets, headed to an internet cafe to catch up on emails and Facebook (most people didn’t have smart phones when they travelled back then!!), stock up on supplies from the minimart in the bus station and then eventually board a very nice bus to Argentina.........next stop San Carlos de Bariloche. The South America adventure was just getting better and better!!.
