Background: Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians inhabited central and southern Chile; the latter were not completely subjugated until the early 1880s. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-84), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern lands. A three-year-old Marxist government of Salvador ALLENDE was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto PINOCHET, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady growth and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation.

Oct 7, 8, 2008 Patagonia, Chile Today was a 6 hour bus ride through the pampas, into the mountains and ending in Puerto Natales, Chile. This is another small city on the other side of the Andes that is a small port on a long fjord off the Pacific Ocean. Not much to do here except some spectacular sea kayaking and trekking for those that are that energetic. This was a very interesting ( albeit too long ) a drive through a lot of nothing ( and more nothing ) with a few Nandu’s ( Rheas - like a small ostrich [View Full Entry]

After a long bus ride to Rio Gallegos from Puerto Madryn, then after a quick trip to the town, another bus to Punta Arenas. We split from ben so we could do some penguin spotting before seeing some glaciers, and he had plenty of time because he´s taking a boat back up to Puerto Montt. After finding a great hostel (hostel independencia) we headed to the Zona Franca, which is like a massive duty free mall, this port being one of the southernmost in the world so a stopping point for boats not taking the panama canal. Found a great flask [View Full Entry]

Puerto Natales Day 5 we boarded the bus from El Calafate to Puerto Natales, a rather pleasant 4 hour drive on a comfy bus with reclining seats. Apart from the fast steady climb to a great height through the Andes that set my ears wildly popping the landscape was fascinating. Barron plains of Connemara style scenary teaming with birdlife to the more chilly flatlands of snow....each landscape changing as we twisted and turned around the mountain roads. And, we saw..... the famous ´roadrunner' only of course this was a real bird of the Osterich family called a Nandu that the cartoon [View Full Entry]

Puerto Natales is a strange place, as you venture further south in South America you literally feel like your at the end of the world. Its like time has forgotton this place, with lots of corrugated iron houses and shops selling strange stuff. Its like some old Russian outpost in the middle of nowhere. We stayed in what was basically someones house that had some rooms convereted into guestrooms. Our host was friendly but also a little spooky with an unhealthy interest in guns, weird. The big pull to this area is the Torres Del Paine National Park, recognisesd as a UNESCO world biosphere reserve [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Puerto Natales on Thursday afternoon a couple of hours late and had a couple of hours to get everything sorted for the trek - tent, food for 4 days, fuel, clothes, headtorches etc etc. We checked into a friendly family-run hostel who provided us with everything we needed and helped me to organise my travels on from Puerto Natales next week. We prepared for the times ahead by going out for a big asador - basically a BBQ meal with huge chunks of meat and steak. Yum yum yum. Although after 4 days sitting on a ferry and [View Full Entry]
