Hello!!
Sorry it has been a while since we wrote. We have been moving a lot and then not doing a lot at all. I´ll bring ya´s up to date. As the title suggests after Pucon and all the activities we decided we would like to find a nice quiet, hot beach to sit on for a few days or maybe a week. We heard about Pichilemu south of Santiago. Of course this was not an easy place to get to and after a lot of trapesing around we found a bus company who could get us there...well half way there. They sort of threw us out on a by-pass somewhere near a town and we got another bus from there and then a taxi. Arriving at night somewhere is not the best idea, we asked directions to the beach and were told it was 6km away little did we know it was about 500mts away we just couldn´t see it...so back in another taxi and off we went. We found a Cabana and expected to wake up to a beautiful sunrise, step onto the beach and start chilling. However we woke up it was freezing, the sea looked like
it would chew you up and spit you out, it was cloudy and foggy, and there were about 4 million ants setting up camp on our porch. This beach was too cold for curly locks even though he had a foot of insulation on his head.
Needless to say we booked the next bus outta there. Unfortunately by the time we got on the bus the sun was splitting the stones, we realised that the whole town was actually set on the beach and the place was only gorgeous. But what was done was done.
Next stop Santiago, a city we have been told not to go to, cos you were must likely to be mugged and very likely to be killed according to some idiots we met along the way. Santiago is a lovely place. I´m not denying there are probably people living there who are capable of slashing our throats but we didn´t come across any. There were 4 of us which helped too. We stayed for 3 days and had a good laugh. No photos though...I refer you to the statement above regarding muggings...we´re no fools.
We parted way with our two new buddies, Sorcha & Damien
Curly Locks
how do you like them apples frenchy? and we went in search of beach number two...La Serena. I was well excited about this place because they have tonnes of Observatories and as you know I´m a bit of a space freak. The beach was outside of the town, which itself was not that pretty. We booked straight away to go see some stars. It was excellent. We had an Astronomer giving the tour and got to look through a 12" telescope at loads of constellations and clusters which were amazing. But the real treat was the computerised 16" telescope inside the big white dome observatory. There we got to see Saturn and its rings and even Titan (its biggest moon) that was claaass!
But the beach was too far and a bit lumpy, so we headed on again to Antofagasta. Here we couldn´t even find a bed at all...well in a hostel. Only hotels. We checked out the beach but it was too small and a bit smelly.
Next spot Iquique. We were not so hopeful arriving here...ahh but what a pleasant surprise. There is a beautiful clean beach with no wasps, big waves, and an average of about 26 degrees each day. This beach was just
right! And we have been here ever since...which is 8 days already. The two Irish we planned to meet in Bolivia have come over to join us and we are going to stay here for maybe another week. Although its going to be hard to leave.
Bolivia by the way is having some problems with disease riddled mozzies so we are not going there now until wet season is over.
That´s it kids...
In our other news tonight... we have set up a Skype account colmward1. So if you all set one up we can call you for free. Wouldn´t that be nice. Plus if you invest in a web cam, we can see your pretty faces too.
Some of you already know this too...but our Aussie visa has been delayed. It doesn´t look like we will get it this side of Christmas. We have been approved for New Zealand working holiday visas and we plan to sit it out there until Oz lets us in. It´s a little frustrating but not all bad. We just plan to work at crappy jobs and try not spend any savings. Queenstown in the South Island is the selected destination if the job market allows. Means we get to ski!
Thanks for all the Birthday wishes for Col´s b-day. Only 9 years till the big one!!
Muchos Amor xxxxx
