The pantanal is one of worlds most amazing wetlands that spans across paraguay, brazil, and bolivia. The pantanal is known for beautiful scenery and its wildlife. So we decided to take a three day tour of this area and discover the world largest wetland for ouselves.
Day One:
The first day was not actually part of the tour but rather a trannsport day. The bus ride was a little bumpy but our driver was cool because he looked just like mr miagi (i should have taken a pictures. We were lucky to have a great group of two dutch girls and an english couple. Our lodge was very simple.. I small room on stilts that was surrounded my muddy marsh. Around the lodge there were various bird species, camens, and the largest rodent in the world...they are so cute i want one.
Day two: Bright and early we took a boat trip through the river of the pantanal. We didnt see as many animals as I had hoped but we did see some. Howler monkeys, tons of birds, and camens and alligators. Lets just say i think i lost count of how many alligators and camens i saw
because they were everywhere. after a nice tour of the area we went swimming amongst the alligators and parhanas. The water was weird because it made you appeared a weird orange color like you had spent one too many days in the tanning bed. After a quick rest and lunch we went on a two and a half hour horse ride. Well i hadnt been horseback riding in like 13 years but luckily it wasnt diffcult, but did make me a little sore. We didnt see too many animals but it was anice tour of the area.
Day three: We started the day with a jeep safari of the area. On the safarai we saw lots of birds including tucans, emus, and vultures, alligators, camens, the largest rodents (there names slip my mind), and lots of dead cattle. After the safari we took a hike through the pantanal. The area is flat but the aea is a huge wetland so we had t walk through water about waste high. Which would be fine if you didnt see an alligator one second and about 50 meters away start walking through the water. Our whole group was little paranoid of getting
attacked because alligators and camens are everywhere...luckily everyone survived. we saw some more howler monkeys on our hike, lots of alligators and camens, birds, and these cute little creatures which i cant remember there names either. we also learned about different trees and plant lives. There is this one branch that if you are lost if you cut it open is a water source. The water was good and sweet. After the hike we decided to go for a swim as well. It is weird though swimming where people at the same time are fishing for parhanas.
That night I discovered it was passover, which i should have known. Luckily some israelis were prepared with some wine. So we settled for drinking our four glasses of wine. They wanted to sing passover songs as well but they got a little embarassed...not your typical passover but there wasnt much we could do. After the celbration we went on a night jeep safari...which meant we cought a camen and everyone took pictures with it. I would love to say that i went into the water and cought the camen myself but truthful those things are a little scary....but i did get
my picture. Being our last night in the pantanal we spent it drinkin caprihanas at the gas station/soveigner shop/ resturant.
Day Four: Many people partied a little to hard in our group so it was late start to our day. Being our last it was a day of relaxation. We went tubing down the river. Which was fun even though you were always cautious of seeing alligators or parhanas. Then when we returned one of the other groups had a cought a little anaconda. I got to hold it..damn those things are strong. I was pretty much convinced that thing was going to choke me to death, and this was a small one. those things definitely put up a fight. i watched linda parhana fish for awhile...not too long i dont really like watching animals die. Even parhanas are kind of cute..linda didnt catch anything but everyone including a four year old boy did. After some rest and a meal we said our goodbyes to our friends we had made and headed back to compe grande. although i didnt see a jaguar or puma like i had hoped i had a great time. In experiences like these its not
only the places you are at but the people you meet that make it amazing.
