Irish Flag was the bggest there
No English or UK one to be seen. He he Once back from the jungle we checked into a hotel and slept like the dead for 15 hours. It was great, best sleep ever. We also washed our clothes which were really badly in need of it. I really wish I’d been a bit smarter with my choice of pants. really did I think cream and light green were good colors for me. The messiest person ever!
Oruno
From La Paz we got a bus to Oruro where we planned to get a train straight out again to Uyuni. However when we arrived we discovered that the next train wasn’t until the following day. So we bought a ticket that train and found somewhere to call home for the night. To our surprise this town turned out to be vibrant and interesting. There was a massive market and a great square where they were doing Michael Jackson tribute acts all day. We found out later this was his anniversary. We also went to the cinema here saw Clash of the Titans which was really nice. Great to do some normal stuff sometimes.
The following day we got the train to Uyuni. This was an exciting change from the bus but
definitely not any faster. I think 40km per hour was about the average. We arrived in Uyuni at 11pm and some lad offered us a cheap hostel for the night which we were delighted to accept. We now know this is defiantly the way to get the best value hostels. Following the lonely planet is definitely the most expensive. After a good sleep we went to find a tour to do the salt flats and the lagoons;. Lots of options, bit we just picked one randomly hoping for the best..
When we met outside the tour office we found another Irish couple. A French girl Solenn and a Taiwanese boy Jerry. It was great to be talking to some fellow Irish and we got along straight away. The first day was cool we went to a museum where I bought mam a box made if salt. It was very cool but unfortunately I managed to break it within the hour; Oh Oh. We went for a long drive along the salt flats where we tried to take some of those cool photos., these didn’t turn out as well as expected. Its not as easy as it looks and we all
decided that you’d need to have a fancy camera and know how to use it to get those cool pictures you see on-line. We had lots of fun trying tho. I’ll upload some of our attempts anyways. The scenery here is amazing. Just soo much nothing. At the edge there are diggers working getting salt for the whole of Central America. At the start we were thinking that they were destroying the natural wonder but after a few hours into it we realized there’s enough for everyone,
That night we stayed in a salt hotel. It was really nice and clean and bright. We went into the local village to buy a few beers before dinner and ended up playing with some local kids. Very cute. One of the older kids took my camera off me and was able to work it better than I was. I’d say they’re well used of tourists about the place. We had a lady traveling with in the role of cook. Her name was Betty and she was a wee bit crazy. The laughed a lot which got everybody else laughing even tho we didn’t know why.
On the second day we went to
see an island with lots of cactuses, a ancient graveyard that some farmer found while he was out walking and lots of pretty lagoons in the middle of what I’d call desert. The lagoons were meant to be green and red but they all looked the same to us. We heard after getting back that they only look ref/green at a certain time of the day and when the wind is at a particular angle. There was some wildlife around the lagoons alrite which was nice there was nothing at all for the first day. For the second night we stayed in a very very basic lodge type place, it was really cold, we all sat in a breezy hall playing cards and chatting.; we had good craic played cards and drank some wine which helped us forget about the cold. Wine and the fact we were wearing every item of clothes we owned.
The third day we for up early and went to watch sunrise over the geysers. These were very smelly. Lots of smoke it was like a witches cauldron boiling up. We couldn’t get any good pics of this with all the dust/smoke in the air.
After sunrise and breakfast we went for a dip in some hot springs. It was defo below 0 outside and about 30 degrees inside. Getting in was easy getting out wasn’t as much fun. A French girl Soleen got pics of us in the water. She was too chicken to take her clothes off. I must get the pics off her and upload them. We dropped Jerry a really nice timid Jerry lad off on the Chilean border and headed home to Uyuni All in all it was a very enjoyable trip, weird to see so much nothing. I’d like to see Bear Grills trying to survive out there on he’s todd.
