Back in Bolivia!
I´m back in Bolivia after two years! And it feels great. So far just in La Paz, but it´s plenty to do here, and loads of impressions to let sink in!
Last time I was in Bolivia I loved La Paz, Eirin feels the same. She was amazed by the city and the first impression when we arrived.
We´ve been here since saturday now, and the days has went quick. The first days you have to take it slow anyway to get acclimatized.
Sunday was spent walking around in La Paz. In the main street they had closed the road for traffic and put up an festival. Loads of locals in the streets and plenty of different stuff going on. Seems like they are doing this quit often and with different themes.
After walking around here for a while we took a taxi to Zona Sur too see if Sergio (a friend of mine from La Paz) was at the office. He´s an mountain guide I met last time I was here and he is now running his own company (http://bolivia-expe.com/). We probably going to use his services for some climbing later on the trip. Anyway, when
we arrived at the address it turned out to be his home address... And of course he wasn´t home. We called him an decided to meet the next day.
Zona Sur is a rich area of La Paz, and the facilities are way better here than further up. We had a little walk around since we first were down here, and ended up in a really good "Parilla". When they had beef from Argentina on the menu the choice was easy! We ate a big steak each and I dreamed about my travels in Argentina two years ago : )
Monday we took a taxi to El Alto. This is on 4000 meters above the sea and the "suburb" of La Paz. It´s maybe an even more chaotic plaze than La Paz it self! But it´s worth the trip. You get a great view from the "mirador" and walking around in the fruit and vegetable markets is a exotic experience. Eirin who works with sales of fruit and vegetables back in Norway was smiling the whole way: "I´m gonna take pictures of this and show it to customers who complain about our services!"
In the evening we met
up with Sergio. It was really good to see him again and hear that everything was fine with him and his family. He had loads of work since he is trying to build up his own company, still working as a guide for other operators, and he´s an biologist as well! With a family and two kids he doesn´t get bored... After a couple of pints and some updates on eachothers lifes, we decided to go out climbing the next day around La Paz. We should take a micro (minibus which is used as public transport in La Paz) to San Miguel to meet him there. I was shure that San Miguel was the end station so we ended up far away from the meeting place, stupid turists as we are!! But we got to see a part of the city we would never see without this mistake...
I waked up that morning with some problems with my stomach and didn´t get any better during the day. The sun here at 3500 meter are really strong as well, so I think that didn´t help any... I did a couple of easy routes but stopped after that... Eirin and Sergio did
a few more before we went back. After a lunch with Sergio I spent the rest of the day in the bed... Fortunately I´m much better today, but the trip to Illimani (a nice mountain seen from La Paz) was skipped.
We are heading for Sorata on friday, and the plan is to do a Downhill biking trip I did last time I was here. It´s a great trip going from the end of Cordillera Real and down to the jungle! Some trekking around Sorata is also in the plans..
Enough for this time. you are probably bored already : )
See you
