Hola amigos.... Just another average week of travelling... you know 20 hour bus rides... viewing one of the 7 natural wonders of the world... watched a huge soccer (er i mean football ) match with tons of ravaged soccer (er I mean football! this gonna take some geting used to!) fans on a big screen and then proceeded to the birthplace of one of the most prominent and rebellious figures of the 20th century...ho hum ...so bored! Our adventure continues picking up in buenos aires where we decided to break down and pay for a plane ticket north to Puerto Igazu...which is tucked along two rivers and bordered by paraguay in the west and brazil in the north east... a very happening place as it is one of the top tourist destinations in south america... thanks ... read more

Mid-terms week is over, mostly A´s I'm proud to anounce! One B, but I guess I can live with that since GRAMMAR has never been the strongest aspect of my spanish... or my english for that matter. I've recently been using my time to explore things a little bit closer to home, with the exception of the "Gaucho Party" of course, and Rosario has held some surprising experiences for me in the past few weeks. To begin with, I had the surprising joy of discovering the arabic community that is ragingly strong here in the city. The arabic community is the third largest group of immigrants in Rosario, and it turns out that they regularly get together to celebrate their history and culture in what they like to call "parties," but that I would more call ... read more

We're rushing through Argentina at this point in an effort to arrive early in Buenos Aires. According to the film Starship Troopers, BA should prove to be a cultural smorgasbord of English-speaking Aryans and giant killer bugs. In the meantime, there's no reason we can't spend a day in Rosario, where Argentina apparently keeps the majority of their towering, ostentatious monuments. After enduring a bus ride from Cordoba on which we were forced to watch Crash (not the awesome 1997 Cronenberg version but this new awful Sandra Bullock one), we were greeted at the door of Rosario Hostel by a fabulously attractive girl named Rita. (Eden and I agreed that seeing fabulously attractive girls is good for helping you forget you just watched an awful Sandra Bullock movie.) The evening got even better when an Australian ... read more

Last night was my first real tango opportunity. We had a party for the program, and everyone got together at La Fluvial, the best place in the city to get a bunch of American college students drunk on red wine without many serious repercussions. It was beautiful, right on the river with a balcony overlooking everything. Beba, the director of the program, had scared up about 10 tango instructors to teach the American kids how to dance. For me, it was lovely. I had the opportunity to dance with two of them throughout the course of the night. It was great, but slightly more difficult with the compromised balance that comes with too much alcohol. However, the second tango instructor that I danced with, Fabian, has invited me to go to a milonga tonight. I might ... read more

Well, here I am again in the middle of a school week, and I think that my spanish is coming along fairly well. I have a fairly good grasp of the slang here now as well, which definitely helps things. During this fin de semana I went to a concert with all of the other kids from the program, and it was amazing! The music was fantastic, se llama Bersuit, they are a fusion group that plays a mix of rock and indigenous music. It was nice to see a local band, since so much of the music that they play here is from the US. Interestingly, a lot of the really popular music (both from here and from the US) is taken straight out of the 80's. Bands like U2 hold precedence over all of the ... read more

Well, here it is Monday, and I'm back at school... not that I did any studying this weekend. I spent the whole weekend having an absolutely wild time. My friend Randi and I went out on Thursday night expecting to meet up with some more of the kids from the program, but ended up spending the evening at the bar with a bunch of Stock Brokers that were having a birthday party for one of the guys from the office instead. It wasn't as wild as it sounds, more just a conglomeration of people that could speak english, but we wandered the streets as a group for a long time, and I eventually took a taxi home at about 4 am. That's one thing that I love about this city, you can find a cab anywhere ... read more

Well, I seem to be getting more and more comfortable in the city. Each day is a little bit easier. I had my first bus ride yesterday, solo. And it was quite an experience. I live near one of the local Futbol stadiums, and there was a game, so by the time that I got home at about 7:30 the streets were packed. I watched the game on TV since I didn't have a ticket, and I don't think that I was allowed to go anyway, since the game was between the Newells (a local team), and the Goias (a Brasilian team). My family is for the Centrals, which is the other local team, not the Newells. Every time that the Newells were carded my father cheered! It was amazing to hear the screams from the ... read more

Well everyone, here I am in Rosario, Arbentina beginning my adventure. I had no idea that all of those years of Spanish would pay off, but I seem to be able to communicate basically everything that I could want to. It´s only the third day, and I´ve already had more adventures than I normally have in a month in Eugene. On the first night, I arrived in Rosario with a group of girls from the program that I met up with in the airport in Buenos Aires. One of the girls, Randi, and I were hungry and went walking down Cordoba Street (the Main drag in Rosario) looking for a place to eat. We were planning on going out with the other two girls later on, so we had to eat quickly. In the end we ... read more

when i came to southamerica, I didn´t even know all the rules to futbol(thats soccer to us gringos) and frankly just didnt find it that exciting. that changes after you experience first hand the energy of a latin american futbol game. the matches here are really more like controlled riots where, incidentally, some soccer happens! ºº aside on violence here: public violence is just part of the culture here in latin america, and is very shocking at first - i recently saw a guy running for student government at my university get beat to a pulp by another party ON TV OVER UNIVERSITY POLITICS. there was also a full-on riot at one of the soccer games after a bad call, which the fans of the two teams decided to pick up where they left off at ... read more

Hello World... Welcome to my brand spanking new travel blog and here begins the first posting of a travel journal which is a tentative yet exciting first step for me ... and hopefully an informative and entertaining diversion for you. Life on the road develops a particular rhythm and after two weeks mainly in northern Argentina I'm beginning to feel the beat, as I ease into a six month journey to discover the joys of Latin America. Sydney is a big city, the lovely reader, and after an uneventful flight via Auckland on 17 September my port of arrival was Santiago, which is a big city. But this is South America and I'm very glad to be here. I spent four enjoyable nights at a hostel in Barrio Bellavista which is a very popular area in ... read more
