At the view point
of Mount Fitz Roy We have just recovering from 3.5 days of hiking in the national park in Patagonia. Our legs are aching and Im really not sure what I will feel like after next week (our guide said this week has been a good "warm up" for what is to come !!!)
When looking at the forecast for the area it has shown a maximum of 16 degrees celcius which I figured would feel pretty cold. But when the sun is out (which it incredibly enough has been for the last 4 days !!) it is well over 20 degrees and this brings with it the trouble of all the rain clothes, warm jacket, gloves, fleece having to fit in the small backpack + extra bag I brought for 3 days of camping (the rest we left behind in El Chalten) as well as packed lunch for 2 days.
We have been to 2 different camp sites during the first part of the trip, and the company we trek with have a permanent camp site in each place with tents already setup and a separate tent for their kitchen and our dinner tent. Since we are only 4 in our group (we
Getting started
Julie, Alan, Chris, Jorge (host) and Juan (guide for this trek) are with an Australian couple) plus the host + a guide it has been lots of space for us. There has been no showers in this part of the trip - only a lake which was about 15 degrees "cold" (did manage to dip ourselves though !), so boy where we happy when we arrived yesterday at the hostel where we could finally get clean 😊 Our campsites have a latrine with a toilet seat luckally, compared to the public camp sites we passed along the way where you stand on a scarily swaying plywood floor with a whole in the middle..... !
The treks have been anything from a few hours to yesterdays long day of 9 hours. But the trek on the glacier yesterday was truly amazing and I must say it was worth the long day (ahhh, how quickly you forget...). This area is close to the Southern Continental Icefield and around 300 glaciers spread out from it, of which we walked on one.
Yes, did I mention how lucky we have been with the weather ? 😊) Three weeks ago the guide had been walking through knee high of snow in the forest we
walked through to reach the glacier yesterday. I really didnt think we would be this lucky, and I hope the luck continues. It would be such a pity being told "Behind those clouds are Mount Fitz Roy !"
It has been hard picking out pictures for the blog, and Im happy Im able to do this half way through the trip otherwise you would be overloaded !
Yesterday was a resting day, with a bus transfer from El Chalten to El Calafate. Today we went to the touristic sight of "Poreto Moreno" (the famous glacier) but that will be part of next blog..... Tomorrow (Monday) Julie heads back to Buenos Aires, and I continue south into the Chilean part of Patagonia.
Not getting all photos in here that I wanted, but I keep you updated next week.
Hasta luego !
