Geo: -38.4161, -63.6167On 1st of January 2016, Alex and I left very early Valparaiso (8 AM) to get to Santiago where he went off sightseeing and in the evening catching a plane to Montreal and me I took a bus to Mendoza. Now, when I started planning my trip, there was no mention of Mendoza, so why did I go there? Because (or better thanks to) Adrián. We met during the JCI World Congres in Kanazawa (Japan) in November 2015 and he immediately invited me to visit him in Mendoza when I told him about my tour. Him seeming like a nice person and me always taking the offer to see another place, I decided to go there for 3 days. I thought, 3 days are absolutely enough to visit a city, but my visit turned ... read more

On Monday, we met for breakfast at 7 AM, to be ready for our pick up at 8 AM by Kahuak Tours and our high mountain guide for the day. This guide turned out to be Martin, who had a constant smile on his face, laughed easily, and was joyful of an opportunity to go into his beloved mountains. Unlike the wine tours, the Aconcagua Experience was not a private tour, but we were lucky that there were only two other people joining us that day, a young Brazilian couple from Sao Paolo. Small world, we all soon found out that we all, us, Martin, and the young couple, had been at Andeluna the day before. During our drive, Martin spent the time giving us a detailed background of this area of the Cordillera, their formation, ... read more

After another enormous breakfast, seriously, we were picked up at the hotel by our Ampora escort for the day, Sabrina. Sabrina is a literature teacher, although she is currently working full time as a tour guide for Ampora. She's also a licensed Sommelier, and very passionate about wine. I do believe that we have to credit her company for how extra special our tour was. Once more, she spoke perfect English and had lived in the United States. I liked her immensely. Uco Valley is a more recent addition to the wine production areas in Mendoza. From the story we were given, Mendoza was an area of high wine production for a very long time, but mostly table wines that were consumed in large quantities locally. It wasn't until some of the wineries decided to enter ... read more

On our second day in Mendoza, Saturday, we started early with a heavy breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Much to my delight, their buffet had what I call Happy Hour food. That is, delicious bread, cold cuts, and cheeses. I always end up eating more than I should at these type breakfast bars. Our wine tour guide from Ampora Wine Tours was picking us up at 10 minutes to 9, to take us to our first winery in Lujan de Cuyo Valley. This valley has some of the oldest, most established and classic wineries. In this instance our Ampora Tour guide Floreana (Flor) showed up punctually to pick us up in a very comfortable van. Flor was a pretty young English teacher, who enjoys wine and working for Ampora on the weekends. She appeared to be ... read more

With no direct buses or other cheap modes of transport to get from Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay to Cordoba in Argentina, I was back on the ferry back to Buenos Aires with Merian in tow. I would have to spend another night at Milhouse - Avenue this time rather than Hipo - before jumping on an overnight bus to Cordoba. Although I didn't think BA was my favourite city after my first visit there and although I wasn't too enamoured about having to return, there are indeed worse places to have to spend a night. Boca Juniors won the Argentinian football league the night we arrived and Merian and I flocked, like almost every Boca fan in the city, to the obelisk on Avenida 9 de Juilo to witness the celebrations. A sea of blue ... read more

Hello Party People, We woke up early as Vick wanted to wash her hair, if she had done it the night before she would have got a bad neck?? (Women, Vick said she didn’t have a hairdryer, so all you women will understand). Also we wanted to cook a pasta salad for the BBQ, Sergio, (our couch surfing host in Chile) wanted to have one today in the mountains, which sounded quite cool. Once we got downstairs and on the Wi-Fi our terrible day started. Sergio said he was going to be at our hostel at 10:00, however we had a message on whatsapp saying that he couldn’t get through the border until later in the day, so he would let us know what time he would be here. We carried on and cooked up the ... read more

Hi All, We spent 4 days in Mendoza because we managed to get the bargain of the year for an 8-dorm hostel. We didn’t do a whole lot in Mendoza apart from drink decent wine and watch TV series. So we arrived in Mendoza about 9.30am on Sunday; the coach was meant to arrive at 6.15am so I don’t know how we could have been 3 hours later when there weren’t any long stops along the way. But anyway, after the total bus journey from Cafayate to Mendoza was 19 hours for a total of £65 we made it. When we arrived we knew the direction to the Itaka hostel we had booked-it was about 1.5 miles from the station but we thought we would stretch our legs and get breakfast on the way. We had ... read more

Thursday 9th April - Mendoza Today I did a bicycle wine tour, where I got to visit 3 wineries. A mini-bus picked us up from each hostel and then brought us to the bike rental place. The first was an organic winery run by the Familia Cecchin. We got a tour of the winery, which is rustic and a lot of the processes done by hand, each bottle is labelled by hand, and the grapes are harvested by moon light. I found it interesting and learned a few facts about the different types of grape and wine. After tasting some of their organic wines. We then cycled off to the next winery, this time a big winery called Vistandes. This winery was not organic and the tour guide explained some of the differences, mainly that they ... read more
