Note to readers - this entry is pretty much only about snowboarding and if such things don't interest then probably best not to waste your time... if however you like to have fun standing sideways going down a mountain - there should be some interesting reading. After a frustrating 3 days of waiting out the snow storm (Carsty had to leave to go to work with the snow still falling, knowing that he was going to have to miss possibly the best days of the season - Mijic I hope they realise what you do for that company!) finally the sky dawned clear, the winds were almost non existent and we were able to get up to the top of the mountain and indulge in some of the most amazing in-bounds snowboarding you could imagine. Of ... read more

Part 4 of 4 --------------------------------- So there we were, Guadalupe and I, finally on our way to Parque Provincial Payunia. Although our visit to the park had been delayed by three days, I was determined to see it and was glad we had finally made it. Our tour guide, along with a driver, led 10 of us in a van to Payunia early that Thursday morning (this was two weeks ago, I´m really behind!) The ride was bumpy but the beautiful scenery made up for it. After a pit stop for some breakfast along the side of the road, we made our way into the park, 450,000 hectares in size. It took only a few minutes for my breath to be taken away. There were volcanic cones left and right, and instead of brown dirt the ... read more

After all the fun in Mendoza it was time to head to Malargue, a small town about six hours south of Mendoza. On my last trip down here I had heard the Malargue area was very beautiful but because it is so far out of the way I did not go. But again, the main point of this trip was to explore areas off the beaten path. Guadalupe, whom Hernan and I met in Mendoza, also wanted to go to Malargue so she accompanied us on the 6 hour bus ride. We arrived in the late evening but were disappointed to find out that there were no tours leaving the following morning. The town itself is nothing special but there is an amazing natural park that we wanted to see (description coming in Part IV). Malargue ... read more

All right So I'm sure everyone is sick of getting these things by now.. but this one is a good one I promise with lots of photos of snow and very little writing. So we've been here for 3 weeks now and things have gotten of to a fantastic start. When we arrived on Thursday evening they had just finished clearing the streets from a massive storm and opening day wasn't set until saturday, so I went back down the valley early next morning to get a few things that we were missing from the apartment and was very surprised when I drove back up the hill at midday to see the charilifts turning and about a million people on the hill. Turns out that the day before the official opening day is Dia Libre.. when ... read more

We arrived in San Rafael (about 3hours drive from Las Lenas) at about 8:30am which left us about 20 minutes to find the right connecting bus to the mountains... we found the bus no problems as it was easily identifiable from the long line of people with ski gear waiting to get on it... a little too many people as it turned out. The bus was sold out and we were told that there “might be another one a little later”. Where this bus was going to materialise from was unclear, as was how much later this might occur. Frustrated that we were so close to our destination and seemingly stumbling at the last hurdle I left Alison at the bus station to guard all our bags and went roaming the streets of San Rafael to ... read more

The overnight bus trip from Neuquen north to San Rafael passed quickly, I think we both slept quite a bit despite the lashing rain which we drove through at some point. We arrived at San Rafael about 8am Sunday morning as the sun was rising. We trundled our bags along to the hotel and went in search of coffee. As in nearly every town or village here the local YPF petrol station has a good cafe. After checking in and showers we did the walkabout. San Rafael is dead flat with lots of cyclists - except during the siesta which seems to last for about four hours during the week and all day Sunday. Some nice buildings and wide boulevards with lots of shade. And the town is a centre of wine production so we had ... read more

The other thing that you couldn´t miss in Mendoza is that is has a huge ski culture. The main street is lined with shops selling and hiring ski and snowboarding gear, and at night the restaurants were full of people fresh from the slopes with their big red faces and goggle marks. We decided to give it a try, and even though there are a few resorts close to the city, the best and one we fancied, Las Lenas, is about 6 hours away, near a town called Malargue. So after 4 nights in Mendoza, we headed to Malargue, and straight to a local travel agent. Although the food had been fab in Mendoza, we really miss home cooking and fancied somewhere self catering, so the agent sorted us out with a cabana, and took our ... read more

After leaving the Bambi Hotel, we headed south towards the Laguna Llancelo (sp?) an oasis-like lake found in the middle of a desert surrounded by volcanoes about 100km south of Malargue. We had been told by the tourist office that a guide was needed but this seemed a little fishy since the roads were public and a park ranger with interpretation centre was built near the lagoon. My suspicions were well founded since upon arriving in the park, the ranger explained all the rules in the park, what could be seen, where the flamingoes would be and how we were to get there, he said that a guide was not mandatory and really not needed. Not a big fan of tourism agents who lie to your face buit hey that´s the game I guess. Trying to ... read more

After wandering throughout Mendoza on the 27th, searching in vain for a vehicle that would accomadate the four of us South, we stumbled upon an incredible find. Having been told that no vehicles would be available for at least 4 days and that they would be ridiculously expensive for our required 3 week rental, Laurence and I entered a small tourist agency looking to see what our options were for flights south. The original plan was to bus the 20 hours south from Mendoza to Bariloche but it quickly became obvious that this would be impossible during the busy holiday season. Anyways, after discussing our option with the friendly travel agent, finding that no flights existed between Mendoza and Bariloche and that renting a car would take days, the women behind the desk offered to make ... read more
