Rien de perdu, ... read more

Patagonie is leeg. Overweldigend leeg. Of erger, de lucht ... read more

The health restrictions and precautions remain in place. The Captain says that there is now only a trickle of new reported cases. He thanked everyone for stepping up to the mark and especially the crew for their tireless work in ensuring we keep on top of the problem. The Health inspectors boarded at both Stanley and Ushuaia and gave credit for the precautions we are taking and for this reason allowed the ship to dock and passengers to disembark. There have been times when the Port Authorities have refused ships to berth due to the number of reported cases. I understand that only 2% of passengers/crew have to be infected for an epidemic to be declared. On this trip, 2% of passengers works out at about 52. The crew may be going all out on a ... read more

In 2011 the Saskatchewan synod of the ELCIC sent a small group to Argentina to help with the building of a parsonage in the town of Esquel. 14 of us went along, all of us brimming with enthusiasm to help out a fellow congregation of Lutherans. Personally, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I had fanciful ideas of getting in there with a hammer and nails and actually creating a building. However, as it turned out the building itself was already there, or at least the bones of the building were there. At one point they even had windows and doors installed but vandals had broken them or stolen them and lack of funds prevented them from completing the project. One of the things the SK synod was able to provide was some funds to ... read more

PUERTO MADRYN, ARGENTINA - JANUARY 26 - The weather was great, sunshine, upper 60’s low 70’s, winds calm in the morning, increasing through the day up to 3:00 pm when we left port. I went ashore about 9:00 am. There were several tours available to see nature in the raw, sea lions, Magellan Penguins, elephant seals and even sheep shearing. I decided to walk the downtown area. Beautiful beachfront location with parks and recreation areas. It was a Saturday morning and lots of families were enjoying the nice weather. As I got off the ship a lady handed me a map of the city which was useful. The walk to town was god exercise, I needed. I walked along the beachfront for several blocks before I ventured into town. Puerto Madryn is not a large town ... read more

When we awoke this morning, the sky outside was still dark, something we haven’t been accustomed to at five in the morning. Checking outside, it appeared that we had arrived at our next port of call. I thought that we might be tendering at this port, and I didn’t notice the pier next to the Veendam many decks below the lower promenade. It is a short stay in Puerto Madryn, and we have a rush-rush tour today, as do other visitor’s on HAL tours at this port-of-call. We breakfasted in the Lido once they opened at 6:30 AM. I had some French Toast with sausage and hashed browns; while, Sharon ate the blueberry pancakes (well one pancake had blueberries in it, anyway). I really enjoyed the French Toast and may need to try them again. We ... read more

AT SEA JANUARY 25 Another sea day with no real change in routine, lectures for those so inclined, eating, drinking, gambling, reading, movies, shopping, exercising, doing laundry, etc., etc., etc. There was a Mariner’s Society brunch which was very well attended. The captain gave a toast to the lady on board with the most sailing days, 680 in this case. I then went to the beer tasting event (not good today, two light beers were on the list) and then to the explorer’s wine tasting event. I’m really learning a lot and the cellar master is outstanding. The planned hour session extended to two and the planned five wines expanded to six. If you like wine but don’t know much about it, consider attending a session at the beginning of your next cruise; see if you ... read more

Leaving El Chalten at the unsociable time of 5am was made slightly (and only just) more bearable by the amazing sunrise and subsequent scenery witnessed through the truck windows as we drove, we spent the day following the Atlantic coast heading towards Camarones. Long drive days quickly settle into a routine of dozing, reading and watching the world go by, accompanied by a soundtrack of whatever’s flavour of the day on my ipod, this way 14+ hours of driving passes relatively painlessly. A few 100ks outside of Camarones we stopped for the night, heading to what looked like a lovely little campsite and it was a lovely little campsite to begin with, we set up the tents and got on with cooking dinner, it was still warm and sunny at 9pm, beer in hand, tunes on, ... read more
