English The month spent in Argentina was not exactly travelling through South America as I was studying for a few weeks in a school in the centre of Buenos Aires. It was good to spend some time in just one place, getting to know the city, the great food, hidden corners and I even learnt some Spanish. It was so strange going back to school after years working, but I enjoyed it although once I went to school without doing my homeworks and I was panicking ... I felt like I went back to my high school years!!
I have to say that nothing really special happened during my stay there while I was on my own, it was pretty much: getting up, going to school, try to do all my homework that was quite an amount everyday, discover a corner of the city and then go home for dinner and spend some time with my friend Sebastian that kindly offer me a place to stay for the month.
The highlight, or better the "lowlight" of the first 2 weeks on my own, was going to the police station after a couple of nice ladies stole my bag! I was at
the police station for 4 hours, in a room filled with people, had to speak in Spanish all the time (good job I was learning a bit) and at the end when I told that I had no idea how to get home cos I had no money to pay for the metro and bus and if they could lend me £0.50 I was told that the police is not a charitable organisation ... well guys ... was not expecting that ... but luckily a nice guy that was sitting in the room gave me the money and I managed to get home ok. Even with this incident though I honestly believe that people from Buenos Aires are very nice, they speak to you, want to know you and the city is quite safe, this didn't spoil my time there.
Angel came to visit me for 1 week at the end of May and it was lovely to see him as I missed him lots, it was so strange to spend 4 months with him day and night and then suddenly nothing. We went round the city together, had some amazing "parrilladas" (BBQ), the meat in Argentina is second to
none, honestly ... and the portions are huge. I also loved the milanesas and the empanadas, I'm starting to miss the empanadas now, I had them almost every night, they were so cheap and so many flavours, devinitely will experiment making them at home, if anyone wants to join me for dinner ..... not a great cook though ....
We also went to Colonia in Uruguay for just a day as it is a small town, but increadibly charming and we wished we stayed a night as it is so quiet and peaceful, beautiful little place. On the way there in the morning we had the boat filled with "estudiantes" football fans that were going over to Uruguay to watch their team play in Montevideo (they won by the way). Well, we didn't get to go to a stadium in Buenos Aires to watch a match, but we came very close to it on the boat, the people were all dressed in their colours, red and white, were chanting ... constantly, and the atmosphere was really good, they offered us mate, the typical drink in Argentina, it is something like a tea, and we even learned a song of two,
but I won't repeat them!! It was good fun.
On a night we managed to go to the famous "Cafe Tortoni", where we watched an intimate Tango show, which we both loved, the dancing and the music were amazing and we wished we took some lessons whilst there .... we'll leave this for our next visit.
PS: Very few picks as I had no camera since they stole my bag ...
