Nah its not that bad, really mountain dew would not be a good idea for walking around all day.
The past couple days have been full of interesting experiences and people. When I made my trip plans I also booked some time at a hostel since this would give me an interesting opportunity to meet other international travelers and would also allow me a backup plan just in case my apartment had not worked out. Now this hostel is about a 30-40 minute walk from my apartment. The first time I went to it I had some trouble finding it. I am sure I very much looked like a tourist walking around with a giant map in my hands. In the end I was pretty happy with myself since I managed to find my way to the school and the hostel. This hostel was full of travelers, most of them were irish actually, i am pretty sure I was the only American there. I ended up spending a bit of time hanging out with an irish guy and a girl from Holland. After hanging out with them for most of the night I went to bed since I wanted to
be up the next morning.
The next morning(yesterday)
I woke up pretty early(9 am) after going to bed around 3am. Apparently everyone here in buenos airies loves to stay up late. People have dinner closer to 10 and then go to the bars closer to midnight, and the clubs at around 2 am. I think it will take some getting used to. I tried that day, and eventually succeeded in making it to the famous cemetery that is here. I spent a lot of time walking around and even managed to master the subway system, since it was pretty easy and only costs .90 pesos. Looking at my map I say a giant cemetery north of downtown. Being the ignorant tourist that I was I figured hey this must be it. Since there was no subway that went up there I took a cab. This cemetery was huge. I walked around trying to find evitas grave for a time. Eventually I noticed that this place really did not seem that touristy. (as noted by the funeral I saw occurring). What also clued me in was when I asked one of the workers there if there was any map,
Good good food
Picky people 1
People who think i will starve 0 he looked at me like I was crazy. I then realized that I was at the wrong graveyard.....which I must admit was quite embarrassing. I found the right one on my map(it was much smaller) and walked for about 40 or 50 min after taking a subway to get there. This one was much nicer and definitely more suited for tourists. Though there were a ton of feral cats throughout the graveyard.
I ate cheap wonderful steak for dinner. It was really good and my entire meal was really only around 14 us dollars. This included a large steak and a ton of other food.
That night at the hostel I met a few more people, and Israeli and a Brazilian that was there. Since most Argentineans will often go to a club, we thought we might hazard a time. We went to a popular club called club 69. I had heard about this club since it is mostly run by drag queens that put on a show. We were a bit leery about going but went anyways. The place was completely packed with people, you could barely move there were some many people. After a couple hours
we decided we had had enough and left early at 4 am.
Interesting observations:
*This is the only city I have seen that has a yellow light before the light turns green on the road. Really what ends up happening is that everyone rockets forward when it is yellow.
*There is no black pepper. In the US you normally get salt and black pepper when you eat. Here all you get is salt.
*There are a ton of dogs. I have seem people walking close to 7 dogs at a time, though I hear there are some that walk closer to 20 at the same time. As such, there is a lot of dog crap around.
*The city is beautiful but also crumbling. You will see beautiful monuments that have graphiti all over them, and the roads and sidewalks are falling apart.
*You honk your car horn for everything. You are changing lanes, you want people to hurry up, you are warning a pedestrian, you are turning. This is quite different from us since we only really honk our horn when it is absolutely needed.
