An der Stelle, an der heute die Stadt erbaut ist, stand früher Pons Aelii, eine der römischen Festungen entlang des Hadrianswalles. Nach dem 12. Jahrhundert, als hier ein normannisches Kastell von etwa 1080 ausgebaut worden war, entwickelte sich die Gemeinde zu einem wichtigen Kultur- und Wirtschaftszentrum.
