Pompeys Pillar (1 of 2)

Just down the street from the Roman Catacombs is Pompey's Pillar. Funny how history cannot always get it right. The pillar and ceremonial area has nothing to do with Pompey - that was both a Roman and Greek misinterpretation but the name stuck - go figure. Whatever the name, the ceremonial pillar and surrounding Sphinxes, etc. were raised in 300AD to honor Emperor Diocletian for saving the people of Alexandria from a severe famine.
