Our arrival at Mauritius - Indian Ocean

Lieve vrienden en vriendinnen,

Mauritius 4 april 2011.

De eerste cruisetravelblog over onze reis van Mauritius naar Savona/Genua.

Onze reis is uitstekend verlopen. Op 2 april zijn wij uit Roden vertrokken met onze geweldige chauffeur Leon van Sentaxi (fantastisch bedrijf - een beetje reclame maken voor deze taxi onderneming uit Roden mag wel even) richting Schiphol. Om 15.00 uur de eerste vlucht naar Milaan. Hier ruim 9 uur moeten wachten op onze aansluitende vlucht met Air Mauritius. Daarna 12 uur vliegen. Kortom 35 uur nadat wij in Roden opgestaan zijn arriveren wij in Port Louis - Mauritius. En daar ligt ons schip - de Costa Romantica - waar wij de komende 28 dagen op zullen verblijven. Het is voor ons weer een heerlijk gevoel om aan boord te zijn bij Costa.

Hoewel wij wel allebei total loss zijn, direct onze koffers uitgepakt en lekker aan de borrel gegaan en daarna lekker gegeten. Rond 23.30 in ons mandje.

Vandaag 4 april geen excursies gedaan. Lekker een lazy day gehouden en wat rond gewandeld in Port Louis. Leuke plaats en heerlijk weer. Zo rond de 32 graden. Dus wij hebben helemaal niets te klagen. Om 18.00 uur zijn wij vertrokken naar La Reunion. Een vulkanisch eiland ongeveer 250 kilometer vanaf Mauritius.
Nog even een aardig verhaal. De inwoners van Mauritius zijn nog steeds een beetje boos op de Hollanders omdat de Hollanders rond 1750 de laatste DODO van het eiland hebben opgegeten. En dat wordt ons Hollanders nog steeds kwalijk genomen. De DODO is het nationale symbool van Mauritius.

Mauritius April 4, 2011.

The first cruise travel blog about our trip from Mauritius to Savona / Genoa.

Our trip went very well. On April 2nd, we departed from Roden our great driver from Sentaxi Leon (great company - a bit of advertising for this taxi company from Roden is allowed here) to Schiphol. At 15.00 hours the first flight to Milan. Here more than 9 hours to wait for our connecting flight with Air Mauritius. After 12 hours flying we did arrive at Mauritius. After 35 hours we awake in Roden we did arrive in Port Louis - Mauritius.
And there is our ship - the Costa Romantica - the next 28 days we will stay on this ship.

It is again a great feeling to be aboard at Costa.

Although we have both a total loss, directly unpacked our suitcases and enjoy the drinks and went beyond good food. Around 23.30 in our basket.

Today, April 4 we did not make any excursions. Enjoyed a lazy day and walked around in Port Louis. Nice place and great weather. At around 32 degrees. So we have nothing to complain. At 18.00 hours we left for La Reunion. A volcanic island about 250 km from Mauritius.
Yet just a nice story. The people of Mauritius are still a bit upset with the Dutch because the Dutch, around 1750, have eaten the last dodo on the island . So that killing of the last DODO by the Dutch still make the people of Mauritius angry.
The DODO is the national symbol of Mauritius.

A little bit information about the Island of Mauritius.

The island was known to Swahili,[10] Arab, and Malay sailors as early as the 10th century [11] and was originally named Dina Harobi by the Arabs.[12] The Portuguese sailors first visited it in 1507 and established a visiting base leaving the island uninhabited. Five ships of the Dutch Second Fleet were blown off course during a cyclone while on their way to the Spice Islands and landed on the island in 1598, naming it in honor of Prince Maurice of Nassau, the Stadtholder of the Netherlands.[13][14]
In 1638, the Dutch established the first permanent settlement. Because of tough climatic conditions including cyclones and the deterioration of the settlement, the Dutch abandoned the island after nearly a century in 1710.[15] France, which already controlled the neighboring Île Bourbon (now Réunion), took control of Mauritius in 1715 and later renamed it Île de France (Isle of France). Under French rule, the island developed a prosperous economy based on sugar production.
In the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815) the British set out to gain control of the island. Despite winning the Battle of Grand Port, Napoleon's only naval victory over the British, the French surrendered to a British invasion at Cap Malheureux three months later. They formally surrendered on 3 December 1810, on terms allowing settlers to keep their land and property and to use the French language and law of France in criminal and civil matters. Under British rule, the island's name reverted to the original one. Mauritius then went on to become independent in 1968. It became a republic in 1992.
