so sorry for missing my "friday posting." i had a bit of a rough end to my week: 3 tests in 3 days and family day at psu. i took another test this morning...little iffy on that one, but oh well. looking forward to a week of intense homework for sure. hope all is well with you. enjoy - b 8 August 2009 Not to leave you hanging on the missing “Idea Box” from the last blog, but I had to get off my tangent. And things did sort of keep down sliding from there, but redemption after a massive landslide of backwards momentum is so sweet. The original “Idea Box” was never located, I think it got lost in the shuffle of new headmasters, but a replacement is now in its place. And, once word ... read more

here's another blog. this week flew by for me; have a fun weekend planned at a big cc meet in joplin. that's what my saturday will be. hope you have a great one and weekend. - b 25 July 2009 Today was Saturday. We had big plans; namely three buckets full of wash. We’re both getting over the flu (actually, the whole island is), so, the sheets, towels, the whole works needed a good soap and bleach treatment. But, no rush. This weekend all of the students at the secondary school, who usually sleep in dorms at the school and wake us around 5 am with their terrific singing, were spending the weekend out, so we decided to put off the chores for awhile and (ahem) sleep in. In the midst of our nap time, Justin ... read more

hey gang. it's been awhile huh? we got a box from sherbear tonight, pretty convenient as it's my first weekend home from pitt. loving it, if you were wondering. sher is now burning blogs to a cd so all i have to do is copy and paste. oh ya, definitely liking that system a little better. enjoy... - b 7 August 2009 This is a little bit of a rant about a recent attempt at being too productive on an island. I really should know better. After our little vacation with family, I was feeling a bit guilty about running away from my loyal teachers at my home base here at Gambule Primary School. To make up for it, I wanted to get right back into the swing of things and have a sort of review ... read more

A fabulous couple of weeks exploring the islands to the north of the Vanuatu group. From Port Vila we visited Havannah Harbour - a mere 20 miles where we had a pleasant time with the chief of the village and his family. Onto Lamen Bay on the island of Epi next where there was reported to be a dugong - a manatee with a different tail shape renowned for his friendly nature. There we met up with Joanne and John aboard Feisty (from Oz) and Bungee, Jill and Sue aboard Bloomers (from NZ). We spent a super few days ashore exploring with them and searching for the dugong who was sighted on many occasions, but alas he didn't make himself available for swimming buddy. The overall purpose of our trip was to go to the Rom ... read more

Project MARC’s September expedition could easily be called the most successful expedition of the season. There are thousands of photos taken by over a dozen volunteers that tell some of the innumerable stories from the month. As for the telling of the stories, I’d prefer to leave some of that to the volunteers themselves. They were the ones who truly got to experience the magic of working for Project MARC in Vanuatu. The villages we visited and people we worked with were amazing and so very grateful for our assistance. In most places our volunteers were only assisting the local villagers with the projects while the locals did the lion’s share of the work. The list of Ni-Vanuatu that worked on Project MARC ventures this September is far too long to be compiled here, but the ... read more

Location: Port Vila Length of Stay: 19 Days Cost per Day: $20.00 Alo…Bonjour and Hello…The 3 spoken languages here are Bislama (Pidgeon English), French and English. It is just amazing to see people switch between all three when communicating with a group of people. What a fabulous 1st destination to begin one’s journey. Port Vila is such a gorgeous little place… It is officially the capital city of Vanuatu, however, really it’s just a town sitting on the edge of a beautiful harbour. The Vanuatu people or Ni-Vans as they call themselves are without a doubt the friendliest I have ever come across. Apparently a few years ago, some global survey voted Vanuatu and its people as the happiest on the planet… That’s a pretty big award…I can go sit anywhere and within 5 mins, someone ... read more

On leaving Lautoka, where we cleared out of Fiji, we headed for the most southerly reef pass in light winds. On passing between the islands at 18.30 we encountered fairly heavy, confused seas for the wind conditions which were surprising but a couple of low pressures south of us were affecting the area. Day two turned the seas a little sloppy but we had good winds and by day three it was a little more comfortable - we were flying along with the genniker at around 10 knots much of the time and enjoying a thrilling ride! Landfall was made in Port Villa on Efate at midnight which was a touch unnerving but we had reliable GPS coordinates to guide us in. On dropping the anchor we noted that our friend Leigh on Mi Querida was ... read more

Travelblog August 2009 This year’s August excursions took me to around the islands, but in all honesty, I had very little to do with this expedition. This expedition was all about a pair of real heroes. This expedition was all about Dr. David and Heather Churcher. Dr. Churcher is a modern day Superman. He’s an expert sailor, dentist extraordinaire, and last but not least…Australian. Indeed, this guy would make the comic book Superman look like a lazy slob. Like Project MARC’s founders, Henk and Nelleke Meuzelaar, Dr. Churcher was a cruising sailor with a medical background that found Vanuatu one year and decided to come back and help the people here. Vanuatu has an amazing pull on its visitors and it is not uncommon for the aforementioned scenario to happen. Dr. Churcher contacted me earlier in ... read more

as i typed this blog, my heart seemed to be beating hard. i kept reading about sher's experiences and feeling like i was right there along with her. what a difference it makes to go and see and experience just what sher and justin are seeing and doing everyday. i could practically taste the food, feel the rush of the ocean, and hear the feminine bislama chatter through her words. a blog from me soon, promise. - b 12 june 2009 i am reluctant to write this blog as i am still feeling puny and jaded from the experiences i am about to relate. as planned, we spent the past week in south maewo in the village called asanvari. for the trip down, we rode a cargo ship, similar to the one we took to south ... read more

Travelblog July Part 5 The weekend in Luganville was extremely restful and allowed me to reorganize plans for the rest of the month. Alanna left us on Monday, and I sent Will and Iza to Vila where they had planned to spend the rest of the month. By Tuesday all the original expedition members had flown off to their destinations, so that same day I caught a truck up to the Big Bay Bush, and by Thursday I had a new set of volunteers. The first trip to the Big Bay Bush was to survey the roads for safety, before taking volunteers into the area. It was only a day trip and was facilitated by Brian Renshaw. He and his Landcruiser were originally scheduled to do our delivery to Tasiriki and the Big Bay Bush, but ... read more
