Getting a good night’s sleep in the bush is always a tricky thing. Depending on one’s level of jet-lag, adjusting to an early bedtime can be difficult. When there isn’t much in the way of electricity after the sun goes down and your day begins at sunrise, the prospect of staying up past 7pm seems like a tremendous feat. Once you do get to bed, it can be difficult finding the proper body position to fit the uneven ground or occasional cement floor. Regardless of how diligent you are about tucking in your net or zipping your tent flap, there will often be that one persistent mosquito singing a high-pitched lullaby in your ear while desperately looking for some small patch of exposed flesh. If you do manage to find a moment of solace with the ... read more

Well everyone…it’s been a month since the last entry and a great deal has taken place. Of greater significance, however, is what has NOT taken place. Please try to remember folks, this is Vanuatu, and we first-worlders need to be able to roll with the punches. If you’re not interested in the dreary prose, here’s the short version: The construction of the Sele Clinic is being put on hold at the request of the Ministry of Health, but against my personal desire. I want to do what’s best for the greater good and most economically efficient for our donors, but I feel terrible about not finishing the clinic this year. However, what you want and how you feel are rarely in agreement. If you’re strange enough to enjoy my ramblings, here’s the long version: I’d like ... read more

We made it to Vanuatu after a great day at Dravuni. Our first stop is the island of Espirito Santo and the city of Luganville. Not much of a city really. Most of the construction was done by the US during WWII. The dock still had some of the original quonset huts. The town had about 11,000 people. We had set up a shore excursion from the boat to go in a Dugout Conoe up the RIRI river to a Blue Hole. It was a nice ride there. Our guides were sawing out boards for seats when we got there. It started pouring rain and the first Dugout, 5 of the biggest guys got in an almost capsized the boat. It was pretty funny stuff. We paddled up the river (ended up not being the RIRI) ... read more

The first week of expeditions have been a bit slow moving, but maybe that’s just because I’m still getting acclimated to being in Vanuatu again. No matter how many times I want to push things to go faster, I keep getting taught that you don’t rush Vanuatu. We’ve had a few speed bumps, but I dare not call them ‘obstacles.’ Over here we like to refer to them as ‘New Opportunities for Creative Management.’ When life in Vanuatu decides to throw you a REAL obstacle, it usually involves a natural catastrophic event (i.e. Tsunami, 8.5 Earthquake, Unexpected Volcanic Eruption, etc…All of which happened in 2009). The first day of the month presented one such issue. Due to a communication error on my part, there was a missed connection for one of our volunteers. I was one ... read more

A long way north but it’s still raining - much warmer though which is great, it was really quite cool in Tanna. We grabbed a cab and went to see if we could find a room in the only place in town that mentioned a beach. No problem, this island as well was very quiet with very few tourists. The beach at Beachfront Resort was black sand and the water was very stirred up from all the rain but the place was very pretty. Again the bungalows were quite basic but did have hot water and the staff put fresh flowers everywhere. A tradition here and makes things look so much nicer. A tour guide came to us in the resort and asked what we wanted to do. There were a number of tours we wanted ... read more

Travel Blog 6-24, Luganville. It’s business…It’s business time… “That’s why they call them business socks…” I arrived in Luganville yesterday morning after two weeks in Port Vila, taking care of business. I don’t actually own business socks, but I did bring along a single shirt that would be appropriate to wear in an office. Let me tell you, in the past few weeks that shirt has gotten a work out. For those of you that don’t know me in my natural habitat, Vanuatu, it should be noted that shirts, shoes, and shaving are uncommon things to my person. These past few weeks however have seen me in an ironed, collared, button-down shirt. Since I only have one, it looks like all the photos were taken on the same day. The primary goal of my time in ... read more

We sailed out of Port Vila on the 25th after an awesome day. We spent a day sailing along north along the Vanuatuan archipelago towards the island of Ambrym, the centre of black magic and sorcery in the area, with two active volcanoes. The people are really christian but still practice lots of ceremonies and superstitions. Apparently they were still practicing cannabalism in the 1970's. Its crazy to think that there parents were cannibals. We pulled into a bay on the NW shore in front of a village called Ranon and dropped anchor. Its great, whenver we're anchored, we are able to sleep up on deck instad of the steamy hot hold. My bunk is right next to the galley so even hotter- within seconds of sleeping down below you are covered in beads of sweat. ... read more
