Pago Pago (pronounced Pango Pango) - what a breath of fresh air after five days at sea. Very mountainous and lush, with lovely friendly people. While it was high 20's temp here today, the cooling trade winds made it feel not so humid. We had a long walk around the main area - then decided to catch a local bus around the bays and over the top of the mountain around the national park, it was a lovely trip with gorgeous scenery and a great way to engage with all the locals who were so friendly on the bus. When we arrived at Vatia at the end of the bus line we took a walk around the cove and through the village and then caught a bus back to Pago Pago. There were churches on every ... read more

Before floating off to Honolulu and home, our cruise took us to Fiji, Western Samoa, and American Samoa. Here are a few thumbnails on these islands. There isn't room to tell you everything we did, so some of the story will be told in the captions under the pictures at the bottom of the page. I end with a few observations about globalization and travel. Happy reading. Suva, Fiji Bill, Joan and Nancy took off to see the Island in a taxi. But I needed to post my blog. So I took a shuttle courtesy of the local shopping mall to go in search of a reliable internet café. At the entrance to the mall, there were guys playing ukuleles and guitars and they were dressed pretty much like Fijian cannibals; boar’s tusk necklaces, black smudges ... read more

2,200 miles of sea from Hawaii and we made it. American Samoa (as opposed to Western Somoa). We got off the ship in Pago Pago (pronounced Pango Pango) a town of around 4,000 people. Another Princess ship was in port. Between the two of us, about 5,000 people got off to visit a town of 4,000 all at the same time. So we waited for our tour bus about 1.5 hours. I don't think the town has ever seen a traffic jamb quite like this. Somoans are some big people. The men at the pier would have made the giants front line proud (some of the women too!). Somoa did not look real prosperous. The amazing thing was how friendly the people were. Everywhere we went we heard Talofa (hello) and a wave. It was pretty ... read more

Heading southwest, the Samoan Islands lie about 2300 miles from Honolulu. It seems ages since Chris crawled up Diamond Head yet here they are entering this South Pacific archipelago. These islands are divided in to East and West Samoa. East Samoa, otherwise known as American Samoa is the first port of call. This tiny island of 54 square miles is about 18 miles long and approx. 6 miles wide at the widest point. It is the only American territory in the Southern Hemisphere. The clocks went back another hour so Chris and Roisin are now 12 hours behind the UK. Pago Pago (pronounced Pango Pango) is the main town in American Samoa. As in most of these islands, the origins are volcanic. The bay of Pago Pago was formed millions of years ago when the seaward ... read more
