Mount Cook
way way in the distance So after experiencing my final massive weekend in Qtown which you guys made very memorable, (or not at all memorable for some of you drunken fools), it was time to say my final goodbye and head back up to Auckland, with of course a few stops along the way. First stop is Christchurch - the England away from England. It was a mammoth bus journey, well only 8 hours but after my send off it felt like days so much so that I was very unsociable on the bus and didn’t even try to speak to anyone but I think most people were in the same boat. I did speak to one guy who said that he had spent too long in Queenstown and his body was suffering, how long did he stay you may ask, well 8 days, he should try 3 months.
Christchurch doesn’t really remind me of England, bar the place names. It has Brighton Beach with the pier of course and the Avon River runs through the city and street names remind you of home but that’s it really, but it did have shops, decent ones. After being in Qtown where there is only one shop this
was a luxury, I could buy something and it would not be a guarantee that someone else would have bought the same thing to wear for the same occasion. This doesn’t bother me really but us girls became mini clones of each other wearing the same thing all the time and you know that there will always be somebody wearing the same thing as you that it looks better on, anyway I’m going slightly off topic and quite girly, for this I apologize.
So what did I do in Christchurch, really I just took it easy and met up with Deb, a girl that I met in Wellington who showed me a great time and got her friends to cook for me, it was great and was nice to get off the backpacker trail and speak to people of my own age that actually live in the place and can tell me truthfully of places to go and what is a waste of money. I took a walking tour of the city well I walked around and went into every free thing I saw which included the Cathedral, the Art Centre, the Art Gallery, Chilled out in the gardens and
watched people punt down the river and basically had a chilled day just taking in the sights and sounds of Christchurch. It was just what I needed and even better it was totally free plus I had to regain my energy as I was leaving the next day to head to Kaikoura for the day.
Early, early start the next morning to head to Kaikoura and it took me at least an hour before I woke up, but luckily we had a really great bus and we were soon all talking away and we soon arrived at our destination. I was really excited about Kaikoura as it was here that I was going to swim with the Dolphins out in the wild in the great wild ocean and I couldn’t wait, only 3 people from our bus were up for it and I was surprised I thought it would be a lot more popular but hey ho. so we got into our delightful suits down at the centre as it is coming up to Ski season, it is frigging cold here let alone what we were about to experience when we actually got into the sea (ooh maybe this is
the reason it wasn’t that popular, its all starting to make sense) because of this we were in full wetsuit gear not just the suit which is still not easy to get on no matter how many times I have done it before but we had wetsuit boots, gloves and balaclavas basically we all looked like gimps but as we were all wearing it , it somehow didn’t seem that strange and we were more than grateful when we got into the sea. We traveled by boat for about 45 minutes and then it was time to face our fears and just jump in. There was no guarantee that the dolphins would come over too us and we just had to wait and see which was hard as it was so cold but then they came, we had caught there attention and suddenly they were everywhere, the pod had over 200 dolphins and while some had no interest in us whatsoever, a lot of them were really playful, jumping over us and swimming round in circles and competing us to dive concerts which they obviously always one, it was absolutely amazing and well worth the cold, after a while they
had enough of us and we just couldn’t cope with the cold anymore we jumped back on the boat and headed back to shore. After all the excitement we decided to have an easy night and decided to head to the local pub and try our wits in the local quiz night, it turned out to be quite exciting and it was quite tight in the end but in the end, I’m sure you will be surprised by the result, we lost but we had fun. We then had to get over our defeat and head back to the hostel as the guys had an early start to Nelson while I had to head back to Christchurch to get my flight to Auckland, the place where I started my Kiwi adventure.
