Tour Day 54, Bay of Islands, Russell, New Zealand Day 7, Saturday, December 2, 2023 – Ninety Mile Beach and Cape Reinga Tour Ninety Mile Beach is on the western coast of the far north of the North Island of New Zealand. The beach is actually 88 kilometres long. Its southern end is close to the headland of Tauroa Point, to the west of Ahipara Bay, near Kaitaia. This 88-mile stretch of coastline features sand dunes & cruising tours via 4-wheel drive vehicles. Somewhere in the translation, 90 (almost) kilometers beach became 90–mile beach. Eighty–eight kilometers actually is 54.68 miles. Paul and I took the passenger ferry to Paihia to catch the tour “bus.” Right off the bat, the driver/tour guide emphasized that the “bus” was not at all a bus, but rather a TRUCK. Indeed, ... read more

Tour Day 53, Bay of Islands, Russell, New Zealand Day 6, Friday, December 1, 2023 (The first day of Summer in Oceana) – Paul’s plan was to take the Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach Tour on Friday and return to Auckland on Saturday; however, the tour providers didn’t consult him when they cancelled the Friday tour for lack of enthusiasm (only four people had signed up). Plan B was to visit the Russell Museum which shares the stories of Kororāreka (Russell) and Īpipiri (Bay of Islands). It tells the stories of the first Polynesian arrivals in the Bay, through to the development of Kororāreka (Russell), from a small Māori fishing village, to a port of call for visiting ships and whalers to today's tourist town. Although first discovered by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman (Tasman Sea, ... read more

Tour Day 52, Bay of Islands, Russell, New Zealand Day 5, Thursday, November 30, 2023 – The Hole in the Rock Cruise actually begins in Paihia, New Zealand but makes a stop in Russell to maximize the number of paying customers on board. It was quite windy, making it a little cool for an Arizonan standing on the bow, so I moved back and forth between the protected cabin and the open bow. A young lady from Switzerland stationed herself on the bow and never faltered. Disgusting! She deserves to sleep on the ground and luxuriate in a hostel so she can shower periodically! There’s not much to say so I’ll let the photos do the talking.... read more

Tour Day 51, Bay of Islands, Russell, New Zealand Day 4, Wednesday, November 29, 2023 – In the morning, we returned to the Auckland Museum to “finish the job.” The afternoon, however, found us driving to Russell, New Zealand – location of Paul’s “weekend getaway.” The drive to Paihia, New Zealand was about 3 ¼ hours and almost 150 miles. In Paihia, we boarded the car ferry for the short trip through the waters of the Bay of Islands to Russell. Paul gave me a short driving tour of Russell before we went to the “cottage.” Work was in progress at the rear of Paul’s property on a retaining wall to keep the neighbor’s driveway from slipping into Paul’s back yard. Paul has had the posts delivered to his property for the same endeavor – driveway ... read more

Tour Day 49, Auckland, New Zealand Day 2, Monday, November 27, 2023 – I knew China was a difficult country for travelers. I had started an application a couple months before the cruise began, but I abandoned the process when I learned that folks arriving on ship need to visit a Chinese Embassy to complete the application process. The closet embassy to Mesa AZ – Los Angeles; but alas, there is an embassy in Auckland. Problem solved – NOT. I went to the doctor’s appointment. His diagnosis was bronchitis, and I was given a prescription for an antibiotic. After procuring the antibiotic, we stopped by the Chinese embassy only to find it closed, contrary to the web site hours of operation. Nothing else really exciting to scribe about. Tour Day 47, Cruise Day 47 – Day at Sea Cruising the Bay of Plenty and the Coromandel Peninsula – I was so unimpressed that I didn’t take any photos. Perhaps it was the weather, perhaps the landscape, perhaps my frame of mind; however, the crew was busy assembling the first suggestions of the Christmas season. Tour Day 48, Cruise Day 48, Auckland, New Zealand Day 1 – Arrival and My Introduction to Auckland, New Zealand Sunday, November 26, 2023 – My arrival in Auckland differed from other ports of call on the cruise in that it was time to pack my bags and get off the ship. I had a solid breakfast and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. First, my call for departure was well past the time I was assigned the previous ... read more

Tour Day 45, Cruise Day 45 – Napier, a coastal city on New Zealand's North Island, is set amid the renowned wine-producing region of Hawke's Bay and is sometimes referred to as the "Nice of the Pacific." The town was virtually flattened by the 1931 earthquake, was rebuilt in the art deco style and, therefore, is more commonly referred to as “The Art Deco Capital of the World.” Given that wineries and art deco architecture haven’t made it to my A-list, there were no shore excursions I found appealing. Given the weather was uncooperative, I stayed on the ship. We spent four days with Debbie, Criss and Oscar. It was a relaxing time, no pressure to do anything in particular and great conversation and friendship.Debbie made us ham and cheese toasties for breakfast each morning and dinner most nights. We went to Hamilton Gardens twice. The first day it was to see the new Egyptian garden and renew acquaintance with some old favourites. The second time we took Oscar for a walk in the Rose Garden This was stunning, with some beautiful colours and a huge variety of breeds. On Wednesday Criss drove us all to Raglan. This is a lovely seaside village at the mouth of the Waikato river where we marvelled at the strong surf and the number of surfers paddling out for their turn on the waves. We had a lovely lunch there, ... read more

On Monday morning our accommodation included breakfast so having had our fill we set off about 9. We were heading for Napier, well known for its Art Deco architecture. We drove east across a mountain range. All along the top of the peaks there was a large wind farm, the sails turning majestically in the strong breeze. The sides of the valleys were heavily wooded with many plantations of pine trees. We saw a number of logging trucks, fully loaded, passing by in the other direction. We arrived at Ahuriri, a seaside suburb of Napier, where we were booked into the Navigate Seaside Hotel. We parked by the beach and walked along the shore. It was a sunny day and many families were enjoying the beach. We walked along the Main street. It was lined with ... read more
