Drove from Paihia (2 hours) to Ahipara where we stayed at Endless Summer Lodge. Named after a definitive surf movie filmed in 1966 called The Endless Summer. A really great hostel - better than most hotels we've stayed in for a fraction of the price. After a day of walking along the endless beaches and relaxing, took a tour to Cape Reinga - where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet. The day included a speedy 4-wheel drive along 90 mile beach and sand surfing down enormous sand dunes!! Great fun!! Tim is ill! We knew it would happen sooner or later but we thought it would be in Asia. It was only a matter of time before one of us got the lurgi! Tim has had some nasty stomach bug that came on yesterday lunchtime on our way to Ahipara. He seems a bit better now but we had to cancel our trip to Cape Regina today. On the plus side I got to go boogie boarding which was excellent fun. You could go on the beach which was right outside the hostel. They even lent you boards for free. It is not as easy as it looks but a got the hang of it. I left Tim on the beach with the camera to film and photograph me in action!... read more

yesterday i dropped michelle off at the auckland airport. a family emergency required that she return home for a little while. so, i am on my own for a bit. after i dropped her off at the airport i continued north until the sun started to set. i spent the night in a very small town. not a credit card machine or atm in sight. it was a nice place to be though. i ran this morning on a beach all alone before i started to drive again. i drove today all day. it's funny how quiet the car is. the radio works almost nowhere and eventually i just gave up and listened to chippy's little engine. it wasn't bad. the scenery is amazing in this country. i drove through a neverending tapastry of green and ... read more

Leaving the Bay of Islands we travelled north, stopping in Keri Keri to visit an ancient Maori Pa (fortified village site) and associated European mission house and stone storehouse (both purportedly the oldest examples of their kind in NZ). We had sunday lunch (fush'n'chups) in Manganui on the wharf before continuing on to Ahipara in the far north. We stayed most of the week at the "Endless Summer Lodge" on the most amazing surfing beach and had the most amazing sunny winter weather. We took a daytrip out to the Kari Kari peninsular and the awesome Matai Bay (which is very popular with Kiwis in the summer but we had the place to ourselves) and ended the day with a visit to the wondefully unique "Swamp Palace" cinema in the evening. This cinema, complete with full ... read more
