After so much time taken to get from London to Hong Kong overland it was a bit of shock to be stepping off a plane just 10 hours later in Auckland airport (New Zealand). It shocked not only us, but many of our supporters who seemed somewhat let down to realise the final leg of our journey had been made in such a ridiculously short time. With the bicycles each weighing 18kg there had not been much luggage allowance left for anything else! Luckily my parents were waiting there to make the landing a bit easier and to escort us and our poor bicycles, having lost their status and being reduced to a small sack, down to Tauranga. Our final destination was New Plymouth and Yes we could have ridden back there, another few hundred kilometres but we wouldn’t have made it for Christmas!
A few little thank yous
To George for christening our journey and mapping it out on Google earth
To all those who followed our blog and video diaries and commented on them, your encouragement meant a lot (Mum and Dad take the prize for reading and commenting on every entry!)
To those who
came to meet us and share adventures along the way (and speak English to us when we’d almost exchanged our English for a strange pigeon vocabulary) (Paul, Angie & Peter, Amanda, George, Heidi, Shell & Tim)
To all our wonderful hosts (Ela and Jerzy in Poland, Reinis and Eva in Latvia, Deric in Moscow, Alex in Baikalask, Brian in Darkhan, Martin in Beijing, Nancy in Xian, and Carrie in Hong Kong.)
To the Chinese people, whose good natured helpfulness and taking the time to understand and encourage us made China such a special and wonderful place to be.
And so with that, we have officially left behind our ‘bonkers’ title. Watch this space in 10 years time!
