Well, Lindsay and I headed to Whitianga on January 24th. This was the first leg of our bus pass, kiwi experience, which seems pretty awesome so far. It took us the entire day to get there even though it was only a few hours driving time. Whitianga is located south east of Auckland and it was our only beach stop on the north island. On the way there we stopped at Hahei beach for a few hours. Hahei beach is the nicest beach I've ever seen - it has white sand and clear, warm water.

After our swim break, we got back onto the bus and rolled in to Whitianga around 6:30 or 7:00 pm and got dropped off at our hostel, Cat's Pyjamas. This hostel was tons of fun, it was basically an old house that they converted so it was kind of squishy but it felt really homey. The owner, Sue, knew everyone's names and was very happy to help us out. Before we arrived we had decided that we would stay there for 2 nights and momentarily regretted the decision once we arrived because it was such a small town. But then Sue was to the rescue and informed us of a really nice beach we could go to if we took the Ferry across the water, which of course we did. Now Sue, told us the beach was a 20 minute walk from the ferry, but that definitely wasn't hte case. It took us almost an hour to get there, and half of the walk was up a giant cliff (Shakespeare's bluff) and then we had to walk down the other side. The walk was worth it though because the beach wasn't very busy and it was very nice.

After the beach, we had supper and then went for a walk to get some really good ice cream since it was boiling hot there. They said it was only 27C but it felt like 35. We still managed to get a sunburn even with the constant application of spf 50 sunscreen. Anyways, while we were on our walk, we walked past this real estate place, that my 13 year old self found very amusing, so of course I had to take a picture. It said "LJ Hooker, nobody does it better". It was a nice end to the day. After that, we watched a movie and the hostel and headed to bed since we had to leave for Rotorua at 7:30am. There will be more on that later once we have more time to write in here.

Hope everything is well in Canada!

-Carole
