I guess I should have written this entry a few days ago. However, after the last tirade I wasn't sure if it would be such a good idea. Anyway, the gist is this: we thought that we were in the clear (ish). That our passports + visa should be arriving pretty soon. Instead we came home last week to a message from the high commission telling us that we hadn't filled in all of the questions and that they needed a copy of our marriage certificate. It says nowhere in their form that you need to provide a marriage certificate as one of your supporting documents. To find this out now, six weeks (nearly to the day) since we sent in our applications is a little disconcerting. It says on the website that all applications are ... read more

You may think you know what the trinity is. You are wrong. Let me inform you of one more fun aspect of moving to the UK: bank accounts. You see, I had heard that they weren't easy to come by. I didn't listen. I thought that since I had an account with HSBC, and since they're an international bank, they could just "snap" their fingers and open an account for me. Bob would then be my Uncle. It turns out that I do not in fact have an uncle Bob. HSBC have an international banking center in Australia, any such requests have to go through them and then they send us out the standard package which we fill out and return, processing then takes six weeks. Six Weeks! Fine I said to the lady on the ... read more

We prepared our visa applications last night. I forgot the silly questions that they ask. I've already mentioned the one where they try to trick you in to revealing that you're a terrorist. I didn't mention that there is also a question where they want you to let them know (in an off hand casual kind of way) whether or not you have ever committed genocide or crimes against humanity. I'm really not kidding. It's right there. Much more subtle is the paragraph where they tell you that you can't ever have this visa if you've already had it before, followed by a question where you tell them how many months you have already worked in the UK or if you've held this visa before. This question is made more interesting by the guideline which comes ... read more

Cheri and I are taking French classes at the moment. The idea being that when we get to France and want something we can make the pretence of knowing the language. I can confidantly ask for a chocolate frog or a cup of coffee. Apart from that my language is restricted to introducing myself and members of my family. I guess I should have paid more attention in school. Tant pis. I've downloaded information from the British High Commission about the working holiday visa. Most of the requirements are a snap. There are some funny questions which you really have to wonder about though. Such as: Are you involved or have you ever been involved in a group that has carried out or is planning terrorist activities? ummm. How many people would answer yes to that? ... read more

I got asked in the weekend what I had been up to and what the family had been up to. I don't know. I can never remember anything, let alone anything interesting. I can remember stuff afterwards, but at the time it always comes out as "oh yeah, same ol, same ol, you know". So I decided to put that kind of thing on this website. Well now I have a dilemma, being asked about the family, my response is to put family related news here too. Then again, I leave for Edinbrugh in 4 months. It kind of seems redundant to write about the family because in 4 months I'll be out of the loop anyway. So, I've decided (probably selfishly) not to write about my family. I guess this whole diary entry is explaining ... read more
