Sunday April 23rd
Bula from Fiji!
Today we’re going to church. We’re off to an island (Qamea) that has no power, and is only accessible only by boat. Our day starts around 9 am by getting into Sireli’s boat and we’re off. The sun is blazing down, and we know it’s going to be a hot day. The boat ride lasts about 45 mins as its low tide, and we have to maneuver around quite a few reefs. We get to the island and we’re greeted by Moses, the chief of the village we’re visiting. We are invited to his house, and are greeted by all around. The villagers really seem to like it when foreigners visit. We talk with Moses and his family for a little bit before heading off to church. Moses also happens to be a PADI dive master, which is cool. We’re off to church now, it’s up on a hill and there is a nice breeze going through there. The priest apologizes to us for the service being in Fijian, which isn’t a big deal at all. The priest gave the sermon, and we listened to 3 or 4 songs which were nice. At
the end the Sunday school kids sang us a song telling us to pray everyday. We brought a bag of goodies all the way from Canada for this occasion, the goodies we brought were loonies and toonies made of chocolate. We got our kids to give them out to all the kids of the village, and they loved them. I’m sure they really appreciated it. The service lasts about 45 minutes, and we’re invited back to Moses’ house for lunch. The lunch was nice, and Wes even ate some of it, even going back for seconds! We met a girl from Phoenix, Arizona there, and we chatted with her for a bit. It’s time to head back now as Kirk has a final dive lesson at 2 followed by his exam. The boat ride back is long and wet, and it takes over an hour. We got back just in time as it starts to rain. The dive shop comes by at 3 to pick Kirk up, and the rest of us head down the coast to the local store to buy some stuff for snacks and dinner. Maureen is making us dinner again tonight.
6:30 comes and we’re
wondering where’s Kirk. Jason gives the dive shop a call and is informed he passed with a mark of 46 of 50. Gotta like that! I was hoping for a 40, but 46 is outstanding for 3 days of studying Kirk style. Kirk gets back and we have dinner with our new housemate Vika. Vika is Maureen’s 12 year old niece, and all our kids really like her. For dinner Maureen made us a beef soup, followed by homemade potato salad with steak. Really good food!
Jason’s back looks a lot better today, since that stuff was put on yesterday. We got some an Aloe Vera plant that I’ll butter up his back with later. Hopefully he’ll be 90% tomorrow. We arranged another dive day on Wednesday, which will be great, as the whole family can go out now! Tomorrow we’re going to a craft shop, and another try at the waterslide.
More tomorrow!
