Bula from Fiji!
Today is dive day! And the weather looks great!
The dive master came over to the house at 9 this morning to pick us up, and we’re off to jewel bubbles divers. This company is locally owned which is nice. They really know the sites around here very well. They’re also a very much hands on operation, they setup all the gear for ya, basically you have to sit on the side of the boat, they’ll put on your gear and you jump in. There is no cleaning of reg’s, or cleaning bcd’s they do all that. Best of all because this was my first dive since we did checkouts in October 04. I got to dive with the owner of the company, the head dive master, also Kirk’s instructor. His name is Qio, and he’s a really nice guy, doesn’t want to rush anything. Our plan is to visit 2 dive sites today, and we have 2 tanks of air to use. The first site is a part of the world famous rainbow reef, a 32 km reef just off taveuni. The site we’re going to on this reef is called
the great white wall. So over the side we go, Jason and Paulina are off doing very well for their first dives. There is a cave here that you can go into that starts at 50 feet and ends at 75 feet. I don’t do it, neither does Jason or Paulina, might just be a little too advanced for our first dives. We get down to 45 feet which is plenty for me, we also see a lot of reef fish, but no sharks, which would have been nice. Anyhow, this dive is over after about 35-40 minutes, and we hop back into the boat, and are off two a beach to have some lunch. The dive guys made us some crepe things which are tasty. We saved a few for the fish that we snorkeled with after lunch. We even saw nemo and marvin while we snorkeled. Anyhow after lunch we’re off to a site called cabbage patch. This site ranges from 40 feet to 70 feet, and Jason and Paulina get down to 55 feet, while I got down to 42 feet. There are tons of coral shaped like cabbages. A huge school of fish swam right past
us, there must have been thousands. I’m feeling a little more confidant in my skills here, with the cobwebs off. Kirks training is going well, so we may do a family dive next week with Wes staying at the surface snorkeling… we’ll see, I’ll have to sleep on it. Anyhow this dive lasts 35 mins and we’re back on the surface and heading to the dive shop. On the way back we pass through a school of dolphins. We buy some nice t-shirts there and get a ride back to the house. Its kirks turn now, and he’s off on his training. The rest of the day we spent relaxing at home. Jason was in agony today with wearing his bcd and tanks, as his sunburn was really really bad, it’s now blistering. Anyhow we’re off to bouma falls tomorrow, which should be interesting.
More tomorrow
