Taking it easy!
Just chilling... Fiji…..part two….
Right, from South Sea Island we caught the Yasawa Flyer to Bounty Island. We could have technically swam there it was so close, actually that wouldn’t have been an amazingly good idea as when I’ve been snorkelling with Fran out in the reefs, I panic as soon as I see anything that remotely looks like it could be the outline of a shark….even a harmless reef shark will make the water turn brown. How I’m gonna survive in the water off the coast of Australia I do not know. Anyway, the people from Bounty picked us up and took us to the shore of yet another beautiful island.
We were the only people to arrive at the island at midday and we had a welcome song just for us! In front of 50 or so people, that wasn’t a tad embarrassing….! Got a gorgeous bure right on the beach, fantastic location and a great residence with a shower (cold, but they all are so you get used to it) and a toilet attached…..which was great as it meant no dark stumbles in the middle of the night to the loo.
Bounty Island had great food, apart
Sweaty man
Scary man doing traditional dance from one dodgy lamb curry which made several of us on the island run for the toilet several times in one day, which was usually a bbq. We also ate a traditional Fijian Lovo dinner which was roast chicken and some other meat with some random veggies which I didn’t eat, sorry that was a bit vague but I only had some noodles with bacon and chicken! Over dinner on the first night we met up with some people we had met on other islands and also met up with Matt and Ange with whom we had gotten friendly with on South Sea, and Natalie who we had met on that island too.
On Bounty………
We Found out that it was the island used for Celebrity Love Island (wow…I hear your cry), and the whole thing is in ruins now. Aunt Roz-you would have enjoyed seeing it, I think I remember you being a fan?!
They had a table-tennis table which excited me, and there was a Danish guy there who could play so we had a good knock. Me and Matt had an awesome wind-assisted game…!!
Got a day trip to Treasure Island which
is a swanky five star resort and saw some turtles and an iguana, random.
Did some snorkelling and kayaking. We did the kayaking on quite a windy day which wasn’t the best idea but was good fun. The snorkelling was awesome, saw some purple starfish and loads of colourful fish.
Watched the footy, they had a room purposely for the world cup and there was five of us up for the Trinidad and Tobago game, that was quite cool.
I got extremely sunburnt on the last day, yes…I was lobby. I put loads of sunscreen on then jumped in the pool (it was the pool from Love Island-they had moved it from the TV set…wow I hear you cry again!)…not the best idea.
Saw some traditional dancing and singing and clapped and whooped a bit
Went for a couple of jogs round the island but with no shoes on….which meant I cut my toe up. A cut toe and sand don’t mix…..next few days were painful.
They did afternoon tea and biscuits which was so British! I enjoyed tea every day, very civilized!
On Bounty we had a wicked time, thanks to all
Fran and purple starfish
These things are so random...and purple the people we met there, you made it a great few days. The staff were wicked, the food was good, the beach was pristine and the activities were awesome…and free!
After Bounty it was back to the mainland after some fantastic days on the islands. We were meant to be going to Beachcomber Island but they didn’t have the England games on so we cancelled and spent a couple of extra days on Bounty! How sad, we organised our trip around footy. Which leads me on to the Nadi Bay Resort Hotel…we watched the footy there! There were a few Swedes about so that made it a bit more interesting! Loads of loud and drunk English supporters though, and it was only 6 in the morning. Good effort. Anyway, we were booked in for a night or two so that we could book somewhere else to stay in on the mainland. While we were at the bar we bumped into a couple of guy’s that we had met on South Sea Island, George and Franco. They told us that Fiji were playing Italy the following day and wondered if we would want to go, and of course we did
Watching the England v T+T game
Look at the lively atmosphere....!! It was 3 in the morning! so we all went the next day. It was such an awesome experience, the Fijian crowd really go for it, jumping around and shouting loads, quite amusing! Plus-Fiji won so it was even better. The pre-game atmosphere is great to, loads of stalls all cooking stuff and selling food, it was truly memorable, so glad we were there for that. Anyway, that was in Lautoka and it made a change to see a different place to Nadi. That is also why we chose to stay at Pacific Harbour for two nights, to be somewhere different.
Pacific Harbour was 3 ½ hours from Nadi by coach and really cheap too. We stayed in a place called Tsulu backpackers and it was empty! Only three other kite-surfing Canadians there, they were sound. The accommodation was part of a complex that was called the Art’s Village, this was a huge purposely built tourist attraction for visitors to experience some traditional Fijian arts and crafts, shows, food and just about anything else, pretty impressive. We went to a show which had fire-walkers in, really good. Look at the photo and see them in action. We also had free use of a huge pool
Our 'home' for four days
Our bure on the beach on Bounty and slide and it had a massive pool bar too, we took advantage of that..!! We met two local’s at the bar on our first night who we had a few drinks with and ended up going for a meal together which was random but good fun, they were wasted!
Quite a lot of time was taken up with the internet as tickets for the ashes went on sale while we were there. The village had a really good internet room with loads of laptops in so we were franticly trying to get tickets for ages. It was worth it though as we got tickets for Perth, missed out on Sydney test though which was annoying. Also managed to get day three at Melbourne, not boxing day but good enough!
We then stayed another night at Nadi Bay and caught a taxi to the airport the following morning. We had a wicked time in Fiji, the people we met (you know who you are, hope to see you in the future!) were fantastic (I use that word far too much…and awesome), the Fijian’s and their ‘Fiji time’ were brilliant and so friendly, the weather was superb (I’m struggling for
Looking smooth by the pool
I got really sunburnt this day....this was the calm before the storm other descriptive words…I never say superb..) and we both had a great time. Fran’s back played up quite a bit on Bounty Island and she had a couple of really painful days but a strong Fijian local gave her a few massages so that was all good.
Quite sad to have left Fiji but we take great memories away from our time there. I will always have an image in my head of the locals singing to you while playing tiny guitars. Quality.
Hope everyone is well and looking after themselves. I am in Wanaka at the moment (south island of New Zealand, about an hour or so away from Queenstown) and it has been raining solidly now for about a week which is not nice. Anyway, peace and love to you all.
Thommo…..(ginge)
