Nadi marina
On the way to funky fish After seven weeks of cold and rain in New Zealand, it was amazing to touch down in Fiji and finally see some sunshine! We spent our first night in a hostel on the mainland, where we got to spend the evening eating and having a few drinks around the pool. Was lovely and relaxing.
The next morning we were up early to get our ferry connection out to the malolo islands where we were planning on spending the week. We were picked up by a man in a little minibus, and driven along a stretch of beach to the marina (not sure why he didn't go on the road). This was our first sight of a fijian beach and we weren't disappointed! After an hour on the malolo cat ferry we arrived at the resort of muscat cove, a fairly large resort. From here we transferred to a much smaller boat to be ferried round to the Funky Fish resort. Te captain of the boat, and owner of the funky fish resort was Brad Johnson, ex All Black, and coash of the Fijian national rugby team. Once we arived at the resort we were transfered up the hill by the
Coconut demo
Mmmmmm a whole litre of coconut milk "Funky Fish Limosine"...a tractor and trailor.
We loved the resort as soon as we saw it! A gorgeous swiming pool overlooking the sea, really nice gardens, and a bar/restaurant on top of a hill overlooking the bay. Absolute heaven! There weren't many people staying there which made it feel really personal, and friendly. We spent our first couple of days relaxing by the pool, enjoying the sunshine and the not having to plan or really move very far from where we were. All meals were had in the resort restaurant where the food was absolutely incredible. On one of the days there was a coconut demonstration in the resort, where a man with a very big machete type sword showed us how to cut coconuts, eat them and drink the milk (although most of it ends up pouring down your t-shirt), then what the leaves can be used for. He made a basket which was pretty cool. Rich had a go at breaking into a coconut using a large pointy tree branch, it took him a while but he managed it in the end!
On our 3rd day we decided we should be a bit more active so
we went on a trip to the sandbar out in the bay, from where you can go snorkelling around the coral. There were so many fish it was amazing! As rich was stood up adjusting his mask a small fish jumped out the water and hit him in the face....quite amusing.
That afternoon, wanting to carry on the activities we joined Levi (who worked in the resort) on his little boat to go handline fishing. I didn't really know what to expect from this, but ended up loving it! I managed to catch 4 fish during the afternoon, much to rich's suprise! (he didn't catch any!) It's brilliant, and you can take the fish back to the resort and they cook them for you to have as a starter at dinner. We enjoyed the fishing so much we arranged to go again the following day with Levi, and a couple of our friends who were also staying at the resort.
The next morning I lay round th epool while Rich went off for a few hours snorkelling off the reef right infront of the resort, he said it was excelletnagain, and he caught a glimpse of an eagle
ray.
The next afternoon we all set off in the boat, with rich determined to make up for his poor effort the day before. It didn't take long for the fish to start biting and we all managed to catch some. Rich caught a couple which was good!...as well as a few small rocks. Again we got to take them back and have them for dinner (well....a pre dinner snack).
That night was our last night on the island, and we celebrated by holding crab races! Each person gets a crab with a number written on the back of it, they are all released onto a square board in the middle of a circle, and whichever crab leaves the circle first is the winner! Needless to say it got fairly competitive...with Joe the barman seemingly unbeatable (we think he has a special crab he trains for these occasions).
After an absolutely fantastic week at the Funky Fish resort we were really sad to leave. Everything about the place is amazing, the scenery, the people and the food. Definitely one of the nicest places we have been to so far and we can't wait to go back!
