Malolo Island Travel Blogs

Background: Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government and gave a mandate to the government of Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE.

Fiji - BULA!! Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands » Malolo Island
Morning All….we hope everyone is well! Well as ever we are late…..we left Fiji over 3 weeks ago and have only just got around to updating the blog! Fiji is definitely one of the most beautiful places we have ever been to in the world so far, it’s so beautiful we actually got sick of the perfect scenery on occasion!! We started our journey, like most, in the capital Nadi which was ok but a bit of a dump! We got to experience some of the mainland life and the local market which was an abundance of fruit & veg and [View Full Entry]

After seven weeks of cold and rain in New Zealand, it was amazing to touch down in Fiji and finally see some sunshine! We spent our first night in a hostel on the mainland, where we got to spend the evening eating and having a few drinks around the pool. Was lovely and relaxing. The next morning we were up early to get our ferry connection out to the malolo islands where we were planning on spending the week. We were picked up by a man in a little minibus, and driven along a stretch of beach to the marina (not [View Full Entry]

They used to say that the world was flat, and if you sailed to the end, you'd plummet over the edge into an abyss.. COOL! I'm now in the Eastern Hemisphere, having crossed the International Date Line and 180-degree mark. Not much else to report, but I can safely say Fijans have been the friendliest people in my South Pacific experience. There are some small culture shocks, such as how people ask for gifts. The customs official came aboard, poked through our stuff, went through our wallets, and then asked if we had any iPods or DVDs or clothes that we [View Full Entry]

This is Fiji...?
Snizzle Central!
Wilson?! Where are you?!

Bula!! When you think of Fiji, you think of sun, white sand, palm trees, and a lot of relaxing - coincidentally - that's how my time was, well mostly! Nadi Clear skies as we flew into Nadi, and it was noticably hotter when we "disembarked" the plane! It wasn't long before we experienced "Fiji Time" - normally it's great, no rushing around, just a "when you're ready" philosophy. But when you're sitting in an airport waiting for a shuttle bus....? The Nomads Skyodge hostel was nice, if a little isolated. The $10 meal would only have filled a 5 year old!! [View Full Entry]

Since I last updated the blog, a lot has happened. After all our visitors left us (sniff sniff!) at the end of January, we started the job hunt to keep ourselves fed for the last stretch in Melbourne. But then, Claud got a phonecall to go home, as her dad had had a heartattack. She got to spend two days with him before he passed away on January 26th. Thankfully, Claud is back with us now, in fantastic spirits, despite the hard times she and all of her family have gone through. Our next, and final, three months of travelling are [View Full Entry]

The runway!

After Vanuatu, I flew straight to Nadi and met up with my sister - my first visitor to Fiji! We jumped on the Malolo Cat and cruised to Malololailai Island (Little Malolo Island) before transferring to Malolo Island where we stayed for three nights at the Funky Fish Resort. It was three days of snorkelling, lying around, learning how to husk a coconut, some hiking and eating some fantastic food. Lovely. [View Full Entry]

Plantation Beach
Kayaking

This place was stunning seriously thought we had been taken to the wrong place when we turned up, we even got a welcome drink!! We had a room with an ocean view and our own bathroom which believe me is a luxury. This is the island where we probably gained weight as we got breakfast, lunch and a 3 course dinner. Really not the backpacker lifestyle. We spent most days here in a hammock and snorkelling. There were free kayaks so we had a go at that, first time was quite successful. The second time when we were coming back we [View Full Entry]

Another Fiji evening
Kava Ceremony
Have u forgotten what we look like yet?

Apres the Shark dive we took the rickety open sided local bus back to Nadi. Being a Sunday morning it was filled with locals on their way to and from Church. Sundays in Fiji are all about the church. Nothing is really open and all around you the churches which line the fields and beachsides are in full song literally. It is really nice and something different to see a real sense of culture still pervades this tourist hotspot. In fact the whole of fiji oozes this laid back local feel in abundance. It is like a step back in time. [View Full Entry]
