The first thing that hits you when you get off the plane and walk into the steamy entrance hall in Rarotonga is the rich heady fragrance of frangipani and tiare flowers. After you have made your way through immigration and customs, where there is a local singer with his ukelele to welcome every flight, you are presented with floral leis. The heat, the fragrance and the friendliness set the scene for the rest of our stay in the friendly Cooks. I was very lucky to be in Rarotonga - my friend Lucy won a trip and invited me along too. The only thing was that I had to do all the organising....easy! It was a fantastic trip, worth $5,000, with the only condition that we travel to the Cook Islands. This meant that we could travel ... read more

Today I saw the girl of my dreams. she had a yellow hat on and red shorts with a white shirt. she smiled at me so I smiled back. Then later on in the evening I saw her eating dinner with another man who i presume is her husband as they where holding hands over candle light at the bungalow bar down the beach. That was the extent of my day today.... read more

I haven't written in a while there was a lapse in communication due to the incumbent new year. I was held up In a state of fasting and meditation. I was trying to find piece of mind and a sense of direction for the new year. There is nothing more appealing. I think I need to do the clique thing and think positive.... If there was one thing I learned in the last year Is that I need nothing, only the stomach to digest what life throws at me. As I am typing this the ocean water is calling me to jump In and wash off.. Im back and im soo fresh and clean the water is unusually warm for this time of year and I am feeling it. ... read more

Day 4, and I realise that even though Raratonga is a very small island, you really need a lot more than 4 days to enjoy all it has to offer. So, I have a plan to go snorkelling this morning, and then get ready to head out to the airport for my flight on to Auckland. For the snorkelling, I have decided to join Captain Tama who takes swimmers out in a small boat on the Muri lagoon, which is a marine reserve, so is reputed to have more sea life than other waters. It is clear that Captain Tama takes safety very seriously as he points to the emergency exits, which are to the front or sides of the boat (don’t jump from the rear as this creates sushi), and the boat is equipped with ... read more

Day 3 on Raratonga has started as any other - the sound of crashing waves on the reef, a tropical breakfast, and the application of generous portions of sun-burn cream. What a great life! I have 4 goals for today. One involves some exercise, one the collection of colour, one the observation of a traditional activity carried out in an unconventional location, and last but not least, one involving my continued survival. I should mention that I also have a question for you later. For my exercise, I decided to do the cross-island walk via Te Rua Manga (413m), otherwise known as The Needle. On my map, this looks a fairly easy ramble, and it shouldn’t take more than 4 hours. I have heard that the path is well signposted, and the views from the top ... read more

Day 2 on Raratonga has been another different and memorable experience. I was picked up this morning at by Linda and driven to the Highland Paradise. I had selected this option when booking my stay on Raratonga for the simple reason that it was being offered at an unbelievable price of $1. To be honest, I had no idea what the trip was going to entail, but for that price, it didn’t seem to matter. We drove up into the hills to a traditional looking wooden building without any walls. There, we were introduced to Tutu, the daughter of a third level clan chief. Tutu’s father had started a project to restore the ancient settlement of his people, and since his passing, Tutu has continued with this work. Together with 2 Norwegians and a Germans, I ... read more

Kia orana (hello) from the island of Raratonga - the largest of the Cook Islands. I landed here 24 hours ago, and am already experiencing the very different and amazing atmosphere and life style here. You can see why they call it Paradise with the natural beauty of the vegetation (I am looking out on palm trees loaded with coconuts, double hibiscus flowers, and a wide variety of tropical fruit trees from my veranda), the climate (average temperatures are 20 - 29⁰C year round, with sufficient rain to keep everything green), the happy friendly gentle people (the population of Raratonga island is under 10,000 and all islanders belong to one of the three family clans or tribes) and the pace of life (there’s an interesting mix of so called ‘island time’ - meaning a relaxed attitude, ... read more

I made it through the night. the storm wasn't as bad as I had thought however I felt it cozzy in the cave so I just spent the rest of the night in total darkness with only my cell phone making dirty shadow puppets on the walls, Plato's Cave XXX. When I woke up this morning I discovered such a beautiful day. There is a slight breeze and a cool sting, the kind that makes you feel alive and dead at the same time. I walked along the beach and ran into a produce market. I bought myself a mouth water grape fruit. grape fruit is such a weird name because a grape is already a fruit but when you call something a grape fruit it is a completely different fruit. That regression asside, I cut ... read more

This is my first entry though I have traveled for many months. I sit on the sand as the waves crash at my feet and dream of the somewhat sumptuous scene that I faced the day before. I have been doing odd jobs here. I worked a therapist, a condominium attendant and a thief. The days are starting to blur together now and I figure If I start this blog I will gain some clarity on my life as when I think about back I am not sure what is real and what is made up. I have been drinking a lot and the drugs here are more than helpful at destroying any coherence I may have left. I am hoping for something to give me some substance but I dont know if I can ever ... read more
