G'day mate!!!
WOW!!! Well as most of you already know, we've been having the most amazing time (nothing new there hey!), and we've been to the AUSTRALIAN F1 GRAND PRIX in melbourne.
Before i get ahead of myself, i must remember the few days before the grand prix. We were staying in a melbourne suberb called St Kilda, and we awoke to the sound of screaming formula 1 cars. We knew the grand prix was that weekend in melbourne, but this was thurs and little did we know that the race track was literally 2 minutes from where we were. So we went to check it out and see how much tickets were etc. It was such a buzz just hearing the sound of the cars, that we both decided we really wanted to go, so when the price was reasonable, we bought our tickets for race day (sunday).
That afternoon we visited ramsey street (for those of you that don't know, ramsey street is the street from neighbours, and i respect you for not knowing that, ha). We built it up in our heads that it would be really cool, and hopefully we'd see them filming etc,
and maybe catch a glimps of "toady", everyones fav character. But we we're so let down when we got there! It was literally just a street. I don't know what i expected, but it was just A STREET. The reality kicked in, and i realised i'd driven half way across melbourne to see A STREET, and i felt like a right loser. It didn't even really look that much like the street on the tv, as it was really small etc, and not a film crew or acter in sight. We were laughing for ages at how disapointing it was. We've included a photo to show you.
We then spent a few nights on a lovely campsite with a much needed swimming pool, as we'd had 3 days with temps at 40degrees. Sleeping in the van was uncomfortable, and we were drinking about 8 bottles of water a day, and not even going for a wee, ha. We had looked around the town centre in melbourne, but the temp was just insane, and all we wanted to do was sit in the shade. Honestly, it was unreal, iv never experienced heat like this, and never sweated so much in
my life.
Then the big day arrived, SUNDAY. We got up early and made our way to the grand prix at 10 ish, on one of the free trams. The city has a great tram system, and it made life so easy for us. We got into the race track and were amazed at all the entertainment. There were race cars on display, competitions where you and a mate got to do a "pit crew tire change", and the fastest time of the day got to go down to the pits to meet the racers. There were "meet the pit girl tents", which were highly disapointing, no one was as beautiful as my soph (ha), and there were about 3 races on the track before the F1, including V8 SUPERCARS, and another series, with loads of ferrari's, lambo's and porches, and motorbike displays, aireal displays, red arrows etc.
So we spent the morning wondering around. At one point i nearly got run over by a car. Soph said "mart watch out theres a car trying to get through". So i moved a side and as the car went by i noticed lewis Hamilton sat in the back. I
was really shocked and said, soph its lewis hamilton, and i managed to get a pic, but its not to good. We then took a wrong turn into the VIP/ Grandstand area, and we saw David Coultard. We were loving it. I don't know how we took a wrong turn, but we had a giggle whan we walked back out past the security guards.
Again it was an insainly hot day, so we went and got our seats on the veiwing banks. As we had "general admission" tickets, we could watch the race from anywhere around the track and they had big grass banks where we all sat and watched, and we had suprising good views as you can see in the photos.
The race was really good. the cars are so so fast. amazing how they drive the bloody things. Soph came back with the water supply just before the race kicked off. It was so cool. we were all shouting waiting for them to come racing round our corner as we were off the first bend of the track. once they went past we soon realised we need the earplugs. That was funny in itself as
we then could not hear each other for the rest of the race, and we just kept saying "hey" "what". funny!!! hamilton came first which was even more class. there were so many crashes etc, always good excitment for the race though. After the race had finished we went running down the track as the crown invaded the track, so we decided we would too. everybody was walking off with bits they could find on the track and even billboards. well funny. we could not quite see where he was presented the trophy but the atmosphere was really great.
we now have moved on the a place called torquay and are heading along the "great ocean road" a tourist place in the south. we are gonna catch some of the rip Curl pro surf comp which is going on until the 29th march at bells beach.
see yous all laters
love you

Exciting Adventures!
Hey guys - we've all been waiting for the photos and the goss on the Grand Prix and it looks amazing. The photo of Lewis may not be that great but you can definitely tell it's him how class! The cars look fantastic too what an experience to hear and see them hurtling around the track. I visited the race track in Monaco and it is so narrow and the corners are so sharp I truely don't know how the drivers do it - must take a lot of guts. The weather sounds too hot to handle compared to the snow that is threatening here for the Easter weekend, we're hoping it won't stop us going to the beach for our traditional Easter celebrations. Enjoy Torquay and the Great Ocean Road you lucky devils! Love you lots Helen xxx
